Chapter 6 - The Fall of the Matriarch

By 4:00 AM, the master study of the Beverly Hills estate looked like a war room.
Laptops glowed on the long conference table, printers whirred continuously, and twelve forensic accountants were sorting through mountains of bank statements, forged deeds, and tax filings.
Victoria Vance stood at the head of the table, displaying a massive digital chart on the wall monitor.
"It’s a complete financial fraud scheme, Daniel," Victoria explained, pointing her laser pointer at the red lines connecting my corporate accounts to offshore entities in the Cayman Islands. "Your sister Ashley created a fake property management firm called A&M Luxury Holdings. Over the last three years, she routed four hundred thousand dollars a month out of your estate maintenance fund into this company."
"And my mother?" I asked, sitting beside Emily, who was wrapped in a warm cashmere blanket, drinking hot tea.
"Your mother was the primary beneficiary," Victoria revealed. "She used the funds to cover massive gambling debts at high-limit casinos in Las Vegas and Macao. She lost three million dollars in the last eighteen months alone."
Emily gasped softly, covering her mouth. "Three million dollars?"
"And when the money started running low because Daniel’s corporate accountants began asking questions," Victoria continued, "they decided to sell the eastern land parcel. They needed Emily out of the picture because if Emily had called Daniel directly, the whole scheme would collapse."
"So they systematically broke her spirit," I said, my fists clenching so hard my knuckles turned white. "They made her feel isolated, helpless, and crazy so she wouldn't fight back when they presented the power-of-attorney documents."
"Exactly," Victoria nodded. "It’s psychological abuse combined with grand financial fraud. The LAPD financial crimes unit and the District Attorney’s office are already review the files I sent over. Arrest warrants are being issued right now."
At 6:00 AM, as the golden rays of the California sun began to filter through the grand windows, three marked LAPD police cruisers pulled up the long driveway, their red and blue emergency lights flashing against the white stone facade of the mansion.
Detective Miller, a veteran investigator with a stern face, walked into the grand foyer, accompanied by four armed officers.
"Daniel Carter?" Detective Miller asked, shaking my hand. "We have reviewed the forensic evidence provided by Ms. Vance. The judge has signed arrest warrants for Margaret Carter, Ashley Carter, and Michael Carter for grand theft, corporate embezzlement, identity theft, and forgery."
I looked at Vance. "Bring them down."
Moments later, my mother and sister were brought down the grand staircase by my security guards. They were wearing plain clothes, their makeup ruined, their eyes swollen from a night of panicking in the locked servant quarters. Michael was brought in from the security office, his arm in a sling from the car crash.
"Daniel! Please!" Margaret wept, dropping to her knees on the marble floor before Detective Miller. "Don't let them take me! I am your mother! I gave you life!"
"You gave me life, Margaret," I said, looking down at her with complete detachment. "And then you tried to destroy the life of the woman who saved me when I had nothing. You traded my trust for casino chips and designer dresses."
"Daniel, I’m your sister!" Ashley screamed as an officer pulled her arms behind her back, snapping heavy steel handcuffs onto her wrists. "You can't do this to us! What will the newspapers say?! What will high society think?!"
"High society will know the truth, Ashley," Emily spoke up suddenly, her voice clear, strong, and unwavering as she stepped out from behind me, standing tall at my side. "They will know that you are thieves who stole from your own family."
Ashley glared at Emily with pure, unadulterated venom, but the officer shoved her forward toward the open front door.
"You're all going to pay for this!" Michael yelled as he was escorted out behind them. "We'll hire the best lawyers in the state!"

"With what money, Michael?" Victoria Vance called out with a cold smile. "Every account you own is frozen, every asset is impounded, and Daniel is funding the prosecution. Good luck with the public defender."
I watched from the grand porch as my family was loaded into the back of three separate police cars. The doors slammed shut, the sirens blared, and the vehicles drove down the long driveway, taking the darkness away from our home forever.
