Chapter 5 - The Reckoning of Mark

While Evelyn and Chloe were awaiting extradition in Miami, Mark Davis was facing a completely different nightmare in a separate holding wing.

Mark was not a Vance by blood. He was an opportunistic, mid-level insurance salesman who had married Chloe three years prior, drawn like a moth to a flame by the illusion of the Vance family’s corporate wealth. He had spent years bragging to his brother, Ethan, and his friends about his 'connections' to David’s multimillion-dollar engineering empire.

Now, sitting in an interrogation room with two federal postal inspectors and a New York Assistant District Attorney named Sarah Jenkins via video link, Mark was sweating through his gray prison jumpsuit.

"Mr. Davis," ADA Jenkins spoke through the high-definition monitor mounted on the wall. "Your attorney has informed us that you wish to make a statement regarding the unauthorized wire transfers and the grand larceny charges."

Mark leaned forward over the metal table, his hands trembling violently. "Look, Miss Jenkins! I am a victim here! I swear to God! Evelyn told me David was transferring that money as an early inheritance gift! She said David wanted us to take care of her and go on a family holiday!"

ADA Jenkins raised an eyebrow on the screen, pulling up a financial document. "Is that why you personally forged David Vance’s signature on a power-of-attorney affidavit at a local bank in Brooklyn on December 19th?"

Mark’s heart stopped. "What?"

"We have the bank’s drive-thru security footage, Mr. Davis," ADA Jenkins said coldly. "On December 19th, while David was in Stuttgart, you walked into a Chase Bank branch in Bay Ridge, presented a forged notary stamp, and attempted to add your name as an authorized manager on David’s primary corporate holding account."

"Evelyn gave me the stamp!" Mark panicked, spilling his water cup across the metal table. "It was Evelyn’s idea! She said David wouldn't notice if we moved fifty thousand dollars into a high-yield account under my name to earn interest for the baby!"

"And what about the diamond necklace?" ADA Jenkins continued relentlessly. "The one belonging to the late Margaret Vance, valued at twenty-two thousand dollars, which was found inside your personal luggage at the Ritz-Carlton?"

"Chloe gave it to me to hold!" Mark lied desperately. "I didn't steal it!"

"Mr. Davis, your wife, Chloe, gave a recorded interview to Florida investigators three hours ago," ADA Jenkins revealed smoothly, sliding a document across her desk on the camera feed. "In her statement, she explicitly claims that you were the ringleader. She states that you threatened to leave her unless she helped you access David’s wealth, and that you personally emptied the nursery supplies and took the Swiss infant formula to sell on the internet."

Mark stared at the monitor, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water.

The betrayal was complete. Facing life in a federal penitentiary, my sister had thrown her own husband directly under the bus to save her own skin.

"She... she lied!" Mark roared, banging his fists on the table. "That lying, manipulative bitch! She took the formula! She’s the one who told her mother to leave Maya in the kitchen without food! She laughed about it!"

"Then you're willing to testify against both Chloe Vance and Evelyn Vance under oath?" ADA Jenkins asked, her pen hovering over a official cooperation agreement.

Mark didn't hesitate for a single second.

"I'll tell you everything," Mark sobbed, collapsing onto the table. "I'll tell you every single thing they did. Just please... don't send me to prison."

On the other side of the secure video link, sitting in a private legal conference room in Manhattan, I lowered my headphones.

I had listened to the entire interrogation in real time.

Beside me, Arthur Pendelton turned off the recording monitor. "Mark just handed us the entire family on a silver platter, David. His testimony seals the wire fraud and the conspiracy charges. They won't even make it to a jury trial; their public defenders will force them to take a plea."

I stood up, adjusting my coat.

"Let them turn on each other like wild dogs, Arthur," I said, looking out the window at the snow beginning to fall over the New York skyline. "They spent years pretending to be a loving family while bleeding me dry. Now, they can spend the next decade realizing what happens when the blood supply runs out."
