Chapter 4 - The Cold Awakening

The Miami-Dade County Detention Center smelled of industrial bleach, stale coffee, and sweat.
For Evelyn, Chloe, and Mark, the fairytale vacation had transformed into an absolute nightmare within forty-eight hours.
Dressed in rough, orange canvas jumpsuits, stripped of their jewelry, makeup, and designer clothes, they sat behind a thick pane of plexiglass in the visitor holding area. Evelyn’s face was sunken, her eyes red and bloodshot from two nights of non-stop crying on a thin vinyl mattress. Chloe sat beside her, shivering uncontrollably, her manicured nails broken and dirty.
On the other side of the glass sat Arthur Pendelton, holding a sleek leather briefcase.
He looked pristine in a three-piece charcoal suit, entirely untouched by the filth of the holding facility. He pulled a yellow legal pad from his bag and laid it flat on the stainless steel shelf beneath the glass.
Evelyn grabbed the telephone receiver on her side, her hand shaking violently against the plastic.
"Arthur! Thank God!" she sobbed into the phone. "Where is David? Why isn't he here? Tell him to post the bail! The judge set it at one hundred thousand dollars each! We can't stay in this terrible place another night!"
Arthur calmly picked up his receiver, holding it to his ear with a steady hand.
"David is in New York, Mrs. Vance," Arthur said, his tone as flat and unemotional as a judge reading a death sentence. "He is currently at the Mayo Clinic branch in Westchester, overseeing his wife's second surgical reconstruction and his son's medical rehabilitation."
"It was a mistake!" Chloe screamed into her receiver, grabbing the phone from her mother's hand. "Arthur, tell David I'm sorry! Mark and I didn't know the money wasn't authorized! Mom told us David gave her full permission to use his accounts for the trip!"
"Lie all you want, Chloe," Arthur replied smoothly, pulling a printed transcript from his briefcase and holding it up against the glass. "This is the audio transcript from the security camera in David’s kitchen on December 28th. Would you like me to read the section where you suggest selling Swiss infant formula on the black market to fund your VIP table at LIV?"
Chloe’s jaw dropped. The words died in her throat as she stared at the black-and-white printout.
"David saw... everything?" she whispered, her voice cracking.
"Every single second," Arthur confirmed. "In high definition. With clear, uncompressed spatial audio. The Manhattan District Attorney’s office has already reviewed all ninety-six hours of footage. They have characterized your conduct not merely as theft, but as an intentional, malicious campaign of neglect that nearly resulted in the deaths of Maya Vance and infant Liam Vance."
Evelyn grabbed the receiver back, her face contorted in a mixture of rage and terror. "He is my son! I raised him! He owes me everything! He cannot put his own mother in prison over some peasant girl from Queens!"
Arthur leaned forward, his eyes locking onto Evelyn’s through the glass with a terrifying intensity.
"David wanted me to deliver a very specific message to you, Evelyn," Arthur said softly into the phone. "He said to remind you of what you wrote on the note taped to his refrigerator."
Evelyn blinked, her mind frantically racing back to that cold kitchen. "'Don't call David and pretend you're being treated badly... he's working hard to support all of us...' "
"Precisely," Arthur smiled, a cold, lethal smile. "David is indeed working very hard. He has retained the top prosecution consulting team in New York State. He has ensured that the District Attorney will not offer a plea bargain that does not include mandatory federal prison time."
"He... he wouldn't," Evelyn stammered, tears streaming down her hollow cheeks. "He loves me. I'm his mother."
"You were his mother," Arthur corrected, standing up and closing his leather briefcase with a sharp snap. "Now, you are simply the primary defendant in State of New York versus Evelyn Vance et al. Extradition papers have been signed by the Governor of Florida this morning. You will be transported back to New York in a prisoner transport van at six o'clock tomorrow morning."
"No! Not a van! It's a twenty-four-hour drive!" Chloe screamed, banging her cuffed hands against the plexiglass. "Arthur! Please! Talk to David!"

Arthur turned his back to them, adjusting his cufflinks as two female corrections officers stepped into the room to lead the sobbing women back to their collective cell.
"I will see you in court, ladies," Arthur said without looking back.
