Chapter 3 - The Counterstrike

The following morning, the front page of every major financial and news publication featured a photograph of Vanessa Vale being led out of our mansion in handcuffs.

VALEON TECHNOLOGIES CEO’S WIFE ARRESTED FOR FELONY ELDER ABUSE AND MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR FRAUD.

The stock price of Valeon Technologies fluctuated wildly during the pre-market hours, dropping by nearly eight percent as panic spread among investors. I knew I couldn't stay in the hospital room forever; I had a company to save and an empire to defend.

At nine o'clock sharply, I walked into the main boardroom of Valeon Technologies headquarters. The fifteen members of the board of directors were already seated around the long mahogany table, their expressions tense, whispering frantically among themselves.

At the far end of the table sat Arthur Sterling—Vanessa’s uncle and the vice-chairman of the board. He was a ruthless corporate raider who had used my marriage to Vanessa eight years ago to secure a seat on my board.

“Daniel,” Arthur said, standing up and slamming his hands on the table as soon as I entered. “This is a catastrophe! The media is having a field day! Your wife—my niece—is sitting in a jail cell, and you released a statement confirming the charges! You’ve destroyed millions in shareholder value in less than twelve hours!”

I walked calmly to the head of the table, unbuttoning my jacket, and took my seat. Jonathan Vance sat to my right, setting a thick stack of manila folders in front of each board member.

“Good morning, gentlemen,” I said calmly, ignoring Arthur’s outburst. “Before we discuss stock prices, I suggest you open the folders in front of you.”

Arthur glared at me, but slowly opened his folder. Inside were detailed forensic accounting reports detailing the $1.2 million Vanessa had stolen, along with corporate wire transfers showing that Arthur Sterling’s private consultancy firm had received over $400,000 from those exact stolen funds over the last ninety days.

The room went deathly silent. The other board members looked from the paper to Arthur, their eyes filled with shock and suspicion.

“What is this garbage?!” Arthur spat, though a bead of sweat formed at his hairline.

“That ‘garbage,’ Arthur, is evidence of corporate embezzlement and money laundering,” I said smoothly. “My wife didn't act alone. She used corporate credentials provided by your office to bypass Valeon’s internal compliance protocols. You helped her falsify my mother’s power-of-attorney documents in exchange for a kickback to save your failing firm.”

“This is a lie! A smear campaign!” Arthur roared, turning to the other directors. “He’s using a domestic dispute to purge the board!”

“Ten minutes ago, federal agents executed a search warrant on Julian Croft’s suite at the Grand Regency Hotel,” Jonathan Vance chimed in, leaning forward. “Mr. Croft was arrested with $200,000 in cash, forged property deeds, and encrypted text messages between himself, Vanessa Vale, and you, Mr. Sterling. He is currently cooperating with the U.S. Attorney’s office in exchange for a plea deal.”

Arthur’s face went pale. His hands trembled as he slowly sank back into his leather chair.

I stood up, resting my palms on the table, leaning toward Arthur. “By unanimous vote of the executive committee, your position as Vice-Chairman is terminated effective immediately. Furthermore, Valeon Technologies is filing a civil lawsuit against you for fifty million dollars in damages to corporate reputation.”

Two private security officers I had brought with me stepped into the boardroom, standing behind Arthur’s chair.

“Get out of my building, Arthur,” I said softly. “Before I have the police arrest you in front of the press waiting in the lobby.”

Arthur looked around the table, desperate for support from the other board members. But every single director looked away, distancing themselves from a sinking ship. Defeated, Arthur stood up, adjusted his tie with trembling fingers, and walked out of the room under guard.

I turned back to the remaining board members. “Now, gentlemen. Let’s address the press. We are holding a live conference at noon. I will personally explain that the company’s assets were never compromised, that the perpetrators have been caught, and that Valeon stands firmly against domestic abuse and corporate corruption.”

By three o'clock that afternoon, following the live broadcast of my press conference where I openly spoke about my mother’s recovery and thanked the law enforcement agencies, Valeon’s stock price didn't just recover—it rose by twelve percent, reaching an all-time high. The public embraced the story of a CEO who refused to protect a corrupt spouse and chose justice over silence.
