Chapter 2 - The Fortress of Evidence

By eight o'clock that evening, St. Jude’s Hospital was quiet. My mother was resting in a private room in the intensive care unit, hooked up to IV fluids and receiving treatment for severe dehydration, malnutrition, and soft tissue trauma. The doctors estimated she had lost nearly fifteen pounds over the last two months alone.

I sat in a chair beside her bed, holding her thin, fragile hand. Elena sat on the opposite side, gently applying soothing cream to the deep red marks on my mother’s wrists where Vanessa had tied her to the bedposts.

“She threatened to hurt my children if I said anything to you, Mr. Vale,” Elena whispered, her head bowed in shame. “My daughter is in college, and my son works in the city. Vanessa told me she would use your legal team to destroy their reputations and have them blacklisted. I wanted to tell you every time you called from your business trips, but she stood over me with her phone, watching every key I pressed.”

I looked at Elena. She was forty-two years old, a woman who had worked tirelessly for my family for four years, always quiet, always respectful. I had never realized the sheer hell she had been enduring behind closed doors while trying to keep my mother alive.

“Elena,” I said softly, making her look up at me. “You saved my mother’s life. You shielded her with your own body today. You don't ever have to apologize for anything. From this moment on, you and your family are under my personal protection. My legal team will handle everything, and your job here is permanent, with triple your previous salary.”

Tears welled up in Elena’s eyes, and she nodded slowly. “I didn't do it for money, Mr. Vale. Mrs. Margaret treated me like a daughter when my own mother passed away. I couldn't let that evil woman kill her.”

The room door opened, and Jonathan Vance walked in, carrying a thick leather briefcase. He looked solemn, his eyes reflecting the gravity of the situation.

“How is she?” Jonathan asked, nodding respectfully to my mother, who was fast asleep under the influence of pain medication.

“Stable,” I said, standing up and walking with him to the corner of the room. “What’s the status on Vanessa?”

“She’s currently sitting in a holding cell at the central precinct,” Jonathan said, opening his briefcase and pulling out a stack of financial and legal documents. “Her high-powered criminal defense attorney, Richard Sterling, tried to post bail an hour ago. However, based on the preliminary video evidence provided by Elena and the cloud server, the judge deemed her an extreme flight risk and a danger to the victim. Bail was flatly denied.”

A faint cold smile touched my lips. “And the accounts?”

“Fully locked,” Jonathan replied. “When she tried to use her black Amex card to retainer Sterling’s firm, the transaction was declined. She is currently relying on a retainer paid from a secondary personal account she kept, but that will run dry within forty-eight hours once the asset-freezing order takes full effect.”

Jonathan pulled out a secondary tablet and turned it toward me. “Daniel, what we found on the cloud servers goes far beyond physical abuse. Vanessa wasn't just abusing your mother—she was systematically liquidating your personal accounts.”

I frowned, staring at the screen. “What do you mean?”

“Over the last six months, while you were traveling across Europe and Asia building Valeon’s international divisions, Vanessa forged your mother’s signature on three separate power-of-attorney documents,” Jonathan explained, pointing to digitized scans of legal forms. “She attempted to transfer the deed of your mother’s ancestral estate in Connecticut to a shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands. She also withdrew over $1.2 million from your mother’s private healthcare trust.”

My blood ran cold. “Where did the money go?”

“To a man named Julian Croft,” Jonathan said, pulling up a photograph of a slick, mid-thirtyish man wearing a tailored suit, standing outside a luxury hotel in Miami. “Croft is a high-stakes gambler and a disgraced former hedge fund manager. According to private investigators I hired two hours ago, Vanessa has been seeing him for over a year. They were planning to drain your mother’s estate, declare your mother mentally incompetent, and use the money to fund Croft’s failing investment firm.”

The puzzle pieces snapped together with terrifying clarity. Vanessa’s arrogance, her insistence that I wouldn't ruin my reputation, her attempt to isolate my mother—it wasn't just sadism. It was a calculated, methodical robbery. She was trying to starve my mother to death or drive her into an asylum before I realized what was happening to our fortune.

“Where is Julian Croft right now?” I asked, my voice dropping an octave.

“He’s currently at a five-star hotel downtown, using a credit card registered under Vanessa’s name,” Jonathan said. “Or at least, he was using it—until we canceled it thirty minutes ago.”

“Call Detective Miller,” I said, looking out the hospital window at the glowing city lights below. “Tell him we have grand larceny, forgery, and conspiracy to add to Vanessa’s indictment. And tell him where to find her accomplice.”
