Chapter 9 - The Trial of the Heart

One year later.
The Circuit Court for Anne Arundel County was bathed in soft morning light.
Today was not a criminal hearing. There were no armed marshals, no scandal-hungry reporters, no forged legal affidavits.
The courtroom was quiet, filled only with a few close friends: Sarah, Maya, and a couple of colleagues from the library.
Sitting behind the elevated wooden bench was Judge Sarah Holbrook—the same judge who had been scheduled to hear Eric’s emergency custody motion two years ago.
Sitting beside me at the petition table was Luke. He wore a crisp dark suit, his face calm, steady, and filled with an emotion so deep it made my heart overflow.
In the center of the room sat Poppy, now three years old, sitting on a high wooden chair, wearing a little white lace dress, her legs swinging happily as she drew a picture of a bird on a yellow notepad.
"In the matter of the Adoption Petition of Luke Mallow regarding minor child Poppy Sinclair," Judge Holbrook declared, her voice warm and resonant off the high wood-paneled walls.
She reviewed the thick stack of home-study reports, background checks, and character affidavits provided by social services.
"Mr. Mallow," Judge Holbrook spoke, looking down over her glasses at Luke. "You are requesting full, permanent legal adoption of Poppy Sinclair, assuming all rights, responsibilities, and duties of fatherhood."
"I am, Your Honor," Luke said, his voice firm, clear, and without a single shred of hesitation.
"And Mrs. Sinclair," the judge turned to me, her eyes softening. "You freely give your consent to this adoption, knowing it permanently unites your family under the law?"
"I do, Your Honor," I said, reaching out to lock my fingers with Luke’s beneath the table. "He has been her father in every way that matters since the moment he picked up her stuffed lamb on that plane."
Judge Holbrook smiled warmly, picking up her heavy wooden gavel.
"Having reviewed the petition, the home evaluation, and observing the deep bond present between the petitioner and the minor child, I find that this adoption is in the absolute best interest of the child."
She brought the gavel down with a crisp, echoing CRACK.
"Petition granted. Congratulations, Mr. and Mrs. Mallow."
Poppy clapped her little hands together, not fully understanding the legal terminology, but knowing instantly that something wonderful had happened. "Yay! Daddy!" she chirped, scrambling off her chair and running directly into Luke’s open arms.

Luke caught her easily, lifting her high into the air as she giggled, pressing his cheek against her soft curls while wiping a single tear from his eye.
"I've got you, sweetheart," Luke whispered, holding her tight against his chest. "I've got you forever."
