Chapter 6 - The Unwinding of the Past

Two weeks after Eric’s arrest, the legal landscape surrounding my life transformed entirely.

With Eric sitting in a federal detention facility awaiting trial without bail, his corporate assets were frozen by the Department of Justice. But because he had used our joint marital funds to execute his illegal offshore transactions, the court ordered a complete audit of our former home, bank accounts, and investments.

I sat in the office of my new attorney—a brilliant, fierce woman named Maya Chen whom Luke had personally recommended and retained on my behalf.

"Clara," Maya said, sliding a thick leather folder across her desk. "The federal forensic auditors finished reviewing Eric’s books yesterday morning."

"What did they find?" I asked, sipping my coffee while Poppy napped in her stroller beside my chair.

"Your ex-husband didn't just empty your joint account three weeks ago," Maya revealed, her eyes burning with indignation. "He had been quietly siphoning funds from your personal inheritance trust for three years. He forged your signature on four separate equity release forms, transferring roughly $1.2 million into his shell company."

I choked on my breath. "My father's legacy trust?"

"Every cent of it," Maya confirmed. "Because those funds were stolen through identity theft and bank fraud, the federal receiver has authorized an immediate clawback. The bank has already reinstated the full $1.2 million to your sole account, along with statutory interest."

I sat back in the leather chair, my hand covering my mouth. For months, I had been living in terror of not being able to buy groceries, of sleeping in my cousin’s spare room forever, of failing my daughter.

"And the house in Denver?" I asked quietly.

"The court has ordered the immediate sale of the property," Maya smiled broad and bright. "Since Eric acquired the mortgage using your stolen trust equity, 100% of the net proceeds from the sale—roughly $800,000—will be wired directly to you by Friday."

I covered my face with both hands and wept.

They weren't tears of grief or fear. They were tears of profound, overwhelming relief. The heavy iron bands that had been tightening around my chest for seven long years finally snapped open, letting cold, clean air flood into my lungs.

"You're free, Clara," Maya said gently. "You're financially independent, your name is completely cleared, and Eric Collins will never be able to touch a single hair on your daughter's head again."
