Chapter 7 - The Confrontation in the Dark

The penthouse apartment was dark, illuminated only by the cold, blue light of the Houston skyline filtering through the floor-to-ceiling windows. Danielle stood in the center of the living room, her black silk gown pooling around her feet, her hand reaching up to unfasten the federal duplicate necklace from her throat. She placed it gently onto the glass coffee table, right next to a fresh, clean glass of clear tap water.
The front door opened with a soft click, and Marcus stepped inside. He had removed his tuxedo jacket, his shirt sleeves rolled up, his face filled with the quiet, serene confidence of a man who believed he had just successfully bought his freedom with his wife's life.
He didn't turn on the lights. He walked straight toward her in the gloom, his eyes fixing instantly on her bare neck, then down to the gold necklace resting on the table.
"Why did you take it off, Danielle?" Marcus asked, his voice dropping into a low, dangerous growl that completely discarded the loving husband persona. He stepped closer, his posture turning rigid. "I told you I wanted you to keep it on tonight."
"Because it was making me sick, Marcus," Danielle said, her voice clear, resonant, and entirely free of the fear he expected. She stood perfectly straight, her amber eyes locking onto his in the dark. "Or rather, the piece you wanted me to wear was supposed to make me sick."
Marcus froze, his brow furrowing as a sudden, cold premonition of danger rippled through his frame. "What are you talking about?"
"I know about the Obsidian Group, Marcus," Danielle stated flatly, stepping around the table until the glass was the only thing separating them. "I know about Elena Vance. I know about the three million dollars missing from your firm's secondary ledger. And I know that the necklace you brought home last night wasn't an apology. It was filled with Dimethyl Mercury."
Marcus’s face went entirely white, the corporate arrogance shattering into a million pieces. He lunged forward, his hands reaching out to grab her by the throat. "You crazy bitch—"
Before his fingers could touch her skin, the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the penthouse erupted inward in a violent storm of black tactical gear and blinding flashbangs.
Three armed federal marshals dropped from the roof line, their automatic weapons raised, their laser sights painting Marcus’s chest with a dozen red dots. The heavy mahogany front door was blown off its hinges with a breaching charge, and Marcus Vance stepped into the room, surrounded by six uniformed police officers, his federal badge gleaming under the tactical lights.
"Federal Bureau of Investigation! Arthur Marcus Vargas, drop to your knees and put your hands behind your head! Now!"
Marcus Vargas stumbled back, his hands raised in a desperate, trembling gesture of pure terror as he looked from the marshals to his wife, who stood perfectly calm amid the shattered glass, looking at him with the cold finality of a senior auditor closing a bankrupt account.

"Danielle... please..." Marcus stammered, his knees buckling as a marshal slammed him face-first onto the carpet, clicking the heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists. "Tell them it’s a mistake! Tell them we’re a family!"
"The numbers don't lie, Marcus," Danielle whispered, turning her back to him as he was dragged out into the corridor. "And your account has just been permanently closed."
