Chapter 10 - An Eternal Spring

One year later, the Line 42 bus rumbled up to the curb at the corner of Elm and Broadway. The evening sun was a deep, brilliant gold, painting the Houston sky in shades of amber and clear, radiant orange.

Danielle Vargas climbed down the steps of the coach, her movements light, her posture straight and confident. She wore a beautiful white sun dress that caught the warm summer breeze, and around her neck hung the simple silver locket Evelyn had given her—a testament to her survival that gleamed purely under the light.

She didn't walk toward an empty, silent apartment. She walked down the stone path of the craftsman cottage, where the hydrangeas and white roses were in full, spectacular bloom.

On the wide wooden porch, a celebration was underway.

Evelyn Reed sat in a comfortable rocking chair, laughing richly as Marcus Vance—now a senior director for the regional advocacy firm they had founded together to protect corporate whistleblowers—attempted to light the candles on a beautiful, fresh lemon birthday cake.

"You're late, Dani!" Marcus called out, his gray eyes shining with an absolute, unshakeable devotion as he looked up to face her.

"The bus was crowded," Danielle smiled, walking up the steps and leaning down to press a warm kiss against his cheek before turning to hug Evelyn. She sat down at the wooden table, looking out at the beautiful, peaceful garden that had become her sanctuary.

The crowded transit lines, the toxic gold necklace, the green water, the frantic heartbeat in the dark, and the monstrous betrayal of a husband who smiled were permanently, irreversibly buried in the past. She had listened to the whisper, fought the wolves with the truth, and won her tomorrow. And under the brilliant gold rays of an eternal spring, their new life would bloom for the rest of their days together—unbroken, unshakeable, and forever free.
