Chapter 5 - The Turning Tide

The police arrived just as Elena was spiraling into a breakdown. It hadn't been an accident that they were there; Claire had notified the authorities the moment she saw the sedan. Elena was taken into custody, screaming about conspiracies and "the quiet wife."
The following week was a whirlwind of courtroom drama. The evidence Claire had provided was so thorough, so devastatingly accurate, that there was no way for the Morettis or Daniel to defend themselves.
Daniel tried to flip the script, claiming he was being blackmailed by Claire, but his own emails—which Claire had saved from a server he thought was wiped—told a different story. They showed a man who was arrogant, corrupt, and perfectly willing to sacrifice his wife for a promotion.
Claire sat in the back of the courtroom, watching as the life she had once been trapped in was dismantled piece by piece. She felt a profound sense of lightness. The fear that had defined her daily existence for seven years had evaporated.
"Are you going to testify?" her lawyer asked, leaning over.

"I don't need to," Claire said. "The truth speaks quite loudly on its own."
She was right. The jury took less than three hours to return a verdict of guilty on multiple counts for the Moretti patriarch and his inner circle. Daniel was sentenced to five years for his role in the financial crimes. It wasn't life in prison, but it was a life of ruin. He would lose everything—his reputation, his assets, his status. He would walk out of prison as a man with no name and no future.
