Chapter 9 - The Fall of the House of Sterling

The courtroom exploded into utter bedlam.
Judge Thorne slammed her gavel down five times in rapid succession. "SILENCE! SILENCE IN THIS COURT OR I WILL HAVE THE BAILIFFS CLEAR THE ROOM!"
Eleanor Sterling stood up, her face white as chalk, her pearl necklace trembling against her throat. "This is a trick! It's a recorded voice! It's a scam orchestrated by Elijah Vance's family to steal our money!"
"It is not a recording, Eleanor," the tablet speaker answered instantly, responding in real-time to her words. "Just as it was not a trick when you asked Dr. Harrison to double my dose of neurotoxins on Tuesday night."
Julian’s face went completely purple with rage. "You lying old bastard!" He lunged across the aisle toward the medical recliner, but two heavy federal marshals instantly tackled him to the marble floor, slamming his face against the wood, clicking steel handcuffs around his wrists.
"Your Honor," Marcus Vance said smoothly, stepping up to the judge's bench and handing her a thick binder. "We present to the court the full toxicology reports conducted by the State Forensic Pathology Unit at 4:00 AM today. It confirms lethal levels of Synthetic Compound 88 in Mr. Sterling's bloodstream—a compound provided by Dr. Harrison, who was arrested by federal agents one hour ago and has signed a full confession implicating Eleanor and Julian Sterling."
Judge Thorne reviewed the documents, her face hardening into an expression of profound, terrifying wrath.
She looked up at Eleanor, who stood frozen at the plaintiff's table, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water.
"Bailiffs," Judge Thorne commanded cold as ice. "Take Eleanor Sterling into custody immediately on charges of attempted aggravated murder, corporate fraud, and conspiracy."
Four armed officers surrounded Eleanor, pulling her arms behind her back as she began to scream frantically.
"Julian! Do something! Call the lawyers! JULIAN!" Eleanor shrieked as she was dragged down the center aisle, her designer shoes skidding uselessly against the floor.
Julian was pulled to his feet by the marshals, his expensive suit ruined, his eyes filled with pure, pathetic defeat as he was led away in chains right behind his mother.
The courtroom gradually settled into a heavy, breathless quiet.
Judge Thorne looked down at the medical recliner where Adrian lay, then at Leo standing proudly beside his tablet, and finally at me.
"Mr. Sterling," Judge Thorne said gently. "In light of these horrifying disclosures, this court formally denies the petition for conservatorship. What are your wishes regarding the governance of Sterling Global?"
Adrian’s eyes moved to Leo, then to me, his thoughts translating smoothly through the speakers.
"I hereby restore thirty-five percent of voting shares to the Estate of Elijah Vance," the voice announced clearly. "I appoint Clara Vance as my legal guardian and Chief Executive Officer of the Sterling Trust. And I appoint Elijah's grandson, Leo Vance, as Head of Advanced Technological Research."

I looked at Adrian, tears streaming freely down my cheeks.
He couldn't smile, but his amber eyes shone with a deep, radiant light of love, redemption, and absolute peace.
