Chapter 2 - The Poisoned Bloodline

The air in the room went ice-cold.
"What did you just say?" Marcus demanded, leaping out of his chair, dropping the leather file folder onto the floor. "Adrian... your stroke six months ago was diagnosed by three board-certified neurologists at Johns Hopkins!"
Adrian clicked his throat twice—a hard, angry sound.
P-O-I-S-O-N.
He moved his eyes to the bedside nightstand, where a pristine crystal decanter of water and a silver tray of daily vitamin supplements sat undisturbed under the warm light of a table lamp.
"They've been micro-dosing him," I said, the medical realization dawning on me with horrifying clarity. "A neurotoxin. Something that mimics an ischemic stroke while steadily paralyzing the spinal cord. It wouldn't show up on a standard metabolic panel unless a specific toxicology screening was ordered."
Arthur made a break for the heavy oak doors of the master suite.
"STOP HIM!" Marcus yelled.
Before Arthur could reach the brass handle, two heavy-set men in dark suits stepped into the doorway, blocking his exit. They weren't house staff; they were private security guards Marcus had brought with him under Adrian's secret orders.
Within two minutes, Arthur was forced down into a chair, his wrists zip-tied behind his back, his face slick with sweat.
"I didn't have a choice!" Arthur sobbed, his voice cracking with pure terror. "Mrs. Sterling... Eleanor... she found out Adrian was rewriting his will! She said if I didn't swap his evening supplements, she’d pin the 1996 fraud on me! She promised me five million when the trust dissolved!"
Marcus pulled out his phone, his thumb hovering over the dial pad. "I'm calling the District Attorney."
"No!" I shouted softly, glancing at Adrian’s heart monitor, which was beginning to beep at a frantic, elevated pace. "If you call the police right now, Eleanor and her son Julian will get tipped off by their legal team. They’ll scrub their accounts, destroy the evidence, and file an emergency court order to have Adrian moved to a private facility where they can finish him off!"
Marcus paused, looking at me with newfound respect. "She's right. Julian Sterling filed an emergency petition for conservatorship this afternoon. The hearing is scheduled for Thursday morning at 9:00 AM. If we don't have ironclad physical proof by then, the judge will hand the estate over to Julian."
Adrian clicked his throat sharply.
C-L-A-R-A.
I leaned down over his bed, taking his motionless, icy hand into both of mine. "I'm here, Mr. Sterling. I'm right here."
B-R-I-N-G.
Y-O-U-R.
S-O-N.
I frowned, completely baffled. "My son? Leo is sixteen. He’s a good kid, but he’s currently facing expulsion because he got into a fight defending his little sister at school. Why do you need Leo?"
Adrian’s eyes burned with an intense, unyielding fire.
