Chapter 7 - The Structural Audit

The arrest of Vivian and Marcus sent shockwaves through the regional real estate and construction industries.
Within forty-eight hours, every major newspaper in the state ran front-page stories detailing the multi-million dollar fraud scheme, the attempted murder charges, and the federal seizure of all assets associated with Vivian’s shell companies.
With Vivian and Marcus safely locked away in federal holding without bail, my father and I turned our attention to fixing the damage they had done to Hale Construction.
My first order of business as appointed Executive Vice President was conducting a total structural audit of the Metro Tower project.
I stood on the 30th floor of the half-finished skyscraper, wearing a yellow hardhat and a reflective safety vest. Besided me walked Captain Thomas Ruiz, the chief structural inspector for the city, along with our new head of engineering.
Thomas ran an ultrasonic testing device along one of the massive support pillars holding up the floor slab. The machine beeped, flashing a warning red light on its digital display.
"She's compromised, Isabella," Thomas said, shaking his head with a grave expression. "This rebar batch has a carbon density forty percent below safety regulations. If you keep building up to fifty stories, the lateral wind loads on the upper floors will cause shear failure within five years."
"Can it be retrofitted?" I asked, looking out over the city skyline.
"It can," Thomas replied, pointing to the structural core. "We can install high-tensile carbon-fiber wraps and poured steel jacket supports around every pillar from floor one to thirty. It will cost nearly twenty million dollars and delay the project by six months."
"Do it," I said without a second's hesitation.
Our chief financial officer, who was walking behind us, gasped. "Isabella! Twenty million dollars will wipe out our net profit margin for the entire fiscal year! The shareholders will lose their minds!"
I turned around, looking the CFO dead in the eye.
"Hale Construction was built on my mother's pledge that every building with our name on it is a fortress," I said, my voice echoing across the open floor. "We do not compromise on human lives for a quarterly dividend statement. Call a press conference for 2:00 PM. We are announcing the voluntary delay and the twenty-million-dollar structural retrofit publicly."
When we made the announcement that afternoon, the reaction was immediate.
Instead of stock prices crashing, the market responded with unprecedented trust. Wall Street analysts praised Hale Construction for its absolute transparency and unyielding commitment to public safety following the internal coup.

Within two weeks, three major international municipal development contracts were awarded to Hale Construction—contracts that had previously been stalled under Marcus's corrupt tenure.
We were not just surviving; we were setting a new standard for the entire industry.
