CHAPTER 4 – The Woman Who Refused To Be Broken

I had faced angry investors.
I had faced lawsuits.
I had faced competitors who spent millions trying to destroy my company.
But nothing prepared me for the woman standing in front of me.
Victoria Cole.
My wife.
The mother of my children.
The person who had shared my bed, my home, my dreams.
And yet, in that moment, she felt like a stranger.
A stranger who knew every weakness I had.
A stranger who had spent years studying me.
A stranger who had built an entire life around a lie.
She stood in the doorway of her private office, wearing a black silk dress and a calm expression.
Not guilty.
Not afraid.
Not even angry.
Just amused.
“You're quiet,” she said.
I stared at her.
“What do you expect me to say?”
She walked slowly into the room.
“I expected you to be emotional.”
She looked around.
“Angry.”
“A little confused.”
Then she smiled.
“But I didn't expect you to actually find everything.”
My hands tightened around the notebook.
“You planned this.”
Victoria tilted her head.
“Planned what?”
“My entire life.”
A small laugh escaped her.
“Adrian, don't be dramatic.”
“Dramatic?”
I stepped forward.
“You investigated me before we met.”
“Yes.”
“You manipulated Daniel.”
Silence.
“You used him.”
Her expression changed slightly.
“You have always been so sentimental about your brother.”
I felt my anger rise.
“Where is he?”
Victoria didn't answer.
“Where is Daniel?”
She walked toward the desk and poured herself a glass of water.
“You always ask the wrong questions.”
I stared at her.
“The wrong questions?”
“Yes.”
She took a sip.
“You should be asking why Daniel betrayed you.”
I froze.
“What?”
“You still think you're the victim.”
Her eyes became colder.
“But you never ask why everyone around you eventually leaves.”
Those words hit harder than they should have.
Because Victoria knew.
She knew exactly where to hurt me.
My father leaving me with the responsibility of the company.
My brother abandoning me.
The fear that everyone I loved would eventually disappear.
She had studied my pain.
And then she used it.
“You're sick,” I whispered.
Victoria smiled.
“No.”
She placed the glass down.
“I am realistic.”
“Realistic?”
“Yes.”
She walked closer.
“You think people build empires with kindness?”
I said nothing.
“You think your father became successful because everyone loved him?”
Her voice sharpened.
“Power belongs to people willing to take it.”
I looked at her with disbelief.
“So this was always about power.”
“Of course.”
She didn't even deny it.
That shocked me more than the lies.
The complete lack of guilt.
“You never loved me.”
Victoria looked at me.
For a second…
Something almost human appeared.
Then it disappeared.
“Love is a weakness.”
I felt my chest tighten.
“You married me because of my company.”
“I married you because you were valuable.”
The words were like a knife.
Not because they surprised me.
Because they confirmed what I already knew.
Five years.
Five years of memories.
All fake.
“You know what the funny thing is?” Victoria continued.
I remained silent.
“I almost loved you.”
I looked at her.
“Almost?”
“Yes.”
She walked to the window.
“When I first met you, I thought you were exactly what I needed.”
“A wealthy man.”
“A powerful man.”
“A man with influence.”
She looked outside.
“But then I discovered something inconvenient.”
“What?”
“You were kind.”
I frowned.
Victoria laughed softly.
“You actually cared about people.”
She turned back.
“You cared about employees.”
“You cared about charities.”
“You cared about your family.”
Her expression hardened.
“That made you weak.”
I stared at her.
“No.”
She smiled.
“Yes.”
She pointed toward the nursery.
“Your children are proof.”
My blood ran cold.
“What does that mean?”
“They are your weakness.”
I stepped toward her.
“Don't you dare.”
Victoria didn't move.
“You would destroy yourself for them.”
“That is called being a father.”
“No.”
Her voice became cold.
“That is called being controllable.”
I left the office without saying another word.
Not because I had nothing to say.
Because I knew if I stayed, I might lose control.
And I couldn't afford that.
Not anymore.
I had two children upstairs.
And a woman who saw them as tools.
I walked into the nursery.
Emily was sitting beside the twins.
The moment she saw my face, she knew.
“She admitted it?”
I nodded.
Emily closed her eyes.
“I knew she would.”
“She knew everything.”
Emily looked down.
“She always does.”
I sat beside the crib.
“What else don't I know?”
Emily hesitated.
That hesitation terrified me.
“There is more?”
“Yes.”
“Tell me.”
She looked at the sleeping babies.
“When I worked for Victoria before coming here…”
I turned toward her.
“Before?”
Emily nodded.
“I wasn't her first nanny.”
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What happened to the others?”
Emily's voice became quiet.
“They left.”
“Why?”
“Because they found out too much.”
I felt my stomach drop.
“Emily.”
“One of them tried to expose her.”
“What happened?”
“She was accused of stealing.”
I stared.
“Was she guilty?”
“No.”
“Then why?”
“Because Victoria destroyed her reputation.”
I looked toward the hallway.
“How many people has she done this to?”
Emily didn't answer.
That was the answer.
The next morning, I made the first move.
I called my attorney.
Not Victoria's.
Mine.
A man named Michael Grant.
He had worked with my father.
He was one of the few people I trusted.
“Adrian?”
His voice sounded surprised.
“It's early.”
“I need you to come to the house.”
A pause.
“Is everything okay?”
I looked toward the stairs.
“No.”
Another pause.
“What happened?”
“I need to discuss protecting my children.”
The silence on the phone told me he understood the seriousness.
“I'll be there in twenty minutes.”
When Michael arrived, I showed him everything.
The files.
The documents.
The notebook.
The evidence.
He read quietly.
For almost an hour.
Then he looked at me.
“Adrian.”
“Yes?”
“This is worse than I thought.”
I leaned forward.
“What do you mean?”
“She has been preparing this for years.”
“I know.”
“No.”
He shook his head.
“You don't understand.”
He pointed at the documents.
“This isn't just manipulation.”
“What is it?”
“This is a takeover plan.”
I frowned.
“A takeover?”
“Of your company.”
“But she already has access.”
“Not complete access.”
Michael tapped the notebook.
“She needed your children.”
I felt sick.
“Why?”
“Because if something happened to you, custody and inheritance would become complicated.”
I stared.
“She planned for me to disappear.”
Michael didn't answer.
He didn't need to.
That afternoon, something unexpected happened.
The police arrived.
Two officers.
Standing at my front door.
My heart immediately sank.
“What is this about?”
One officer looked uncomfortable.
“Mr. Cole, we received a report.”
“From who?”
He looked at the paper.
“Your wife.”
I froze.
“What report?”
The officer hesitated.
“An allegation of domestic violence.”
The world stopped.
“What?”
The officer continued.
“She claims Emily assaulted her.”
I couldn't believe it.
Victoria had moved faster than I expected.
“She is lying.”
The officer looked at me.
“We need to speak with everyone involved.”
Before I could respond…
Victoria appeared behind me.
Perfectly dressed.
Perfectly calm.
Tears in her eyes.
A performance.
“She attacked me because she wanted money.”
I stared at her.
Emily stepped into the hallway.
“No.”
Victoria looked at her.
“You should have stayed quiet.”
Emily trembled.
But she didn't look away.
“No.”
Her voice became stronger.
“I spent my whole life being afraid.”
She stepped forward.
“But I'm not afraid anymore.”
Victoria laughed.
“You?”
She looked at Emily.
“A woman with nothing?”
Emily's expression changed.
“I have something you never had.”
Victoria narrowed her eyes.
“What?”
Emily looked at the twins.
“Love.”
The room went silent.
And for the first time…
Victoria looked uncomfortable.
The police eventually left after taking statements.
But the damage was done.
Victoria had started her attack.
She knew she couldn't win with truth.
So she created a new story.
She would become the victim.
And I knew exactly what she was trying to do.
Destroy Emily.
Destroy me.
Take my children.
That night, I found Emily sitting alone outside.
“You should leave,” I said.
She looked up.
“What?”
“You and Noah.”
Her face fell.
“Sir…”
“Not because I don't believe you.”
I sat beside her.
“Because Victoria will come after you.”
Emily looked down.
“She already has.”
I was quiet.
Then she said something I would never forget.
“I've survived worse.”
I looked at her.
“What do you mean?”
She smiled sadly.
“Before Victoria.”
“What happened?”
Emily looked toward the sky.
“I lost my husband.”
I froze.
“You were married?”
“Yes.”
“What happened?”
“He died trying to protect Noah.”
I didn't know what to say.
“And after that?”
“I thought the worst was over.”
She laughed softly.
“I was wrong.”
“What happened?”
“Victoria found me.”
I stared.
“She offered me a job.”
“Why?”
Emily looked at me.
“Because she knew my husband.”
My heart stopped.
“What?”
“She knew him before he died.”
Another connection.
Another secret.
“How?”
Emily looked away.
“Because my husband was the person who helped Daniel expose Victoria.”
The pieces began falling into place.
Everyone who got close to the truth…
Everyone who knew too much…
Victoria destroyed.
But Emily survived.
Why?
Because Victoria underestimated her.
She thought Emily was weak.
A poor nanny.
A single mother.
Someone without power.
She was wrong.
Emily wasn't weak.
She was someone who had lost everything and still chose to protect my children.
And that made her more dangerous than Victoria understood.
Three days later, the biggest shock came.
Michael called me.
“Adrian.”
His voice was serious.
“I found Daniel.”
My heart stopped.
“Where?”
“He's alive.”
I closed my eyes.
“Where is he?”
A pause.
Then:
“He's been hiding under another name.”
“Why?”
Michael hesitated.
“Because he was running from Victoria.”
I gripped the phone.
“Can I speak to him?”
Another pause.
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Tonight.”
“Where?”
Michael lowered his voice.
“But Adrian…”
“What?”
“You need to prepare yourself.”
“For what?”
“Because Daniel says Victoria is not the biggest threat.”
I froze.
“What does that mean?”
Michael answered:
“He says the person Victoria has been protecting all these years…”
“Is someone much closer to you.”
My blood ran cold.
“Who?”
Michael went silent.
Then whispered:
“Your father.”
I stopped breathing.
“My father is dead.”
“I know.”
“Then how—”
Michael interrupted.
“Meet Daniel tonight.”
“Because he says the truth about your family…”
“Started long before Victoria ever entered your life.”
I looked toward the house.
Toward my children.
Toward the woman who had destroyed everything.
And I realized something terrifying.
Victoria was not the beginning of this nightmare.
She was only a chapter.
The real story…
May you like
Had started decades ago.
And my family had been hiding it from me my entire life.
