CHAPTER 3 – The Secret Inside The Family Empire

I used to believe secrets were like wounds.
Hidden things that eventually healed.
Things people buried because they were ashamed.
Things that disappeared with enough time.
I was wrong.
Some secrets were not wounds.
They were weapons.
And Victoria had been holding one against me since the day I met her.
I sat in my office for three hours after Emily told me about Noah's father.
Three hours staring at the same wall.
Three hours trying to understand how my entire life could have been built on lies.
My brother.
My wife.
The nanny who had become a victim inside my own home.
Everything was connected.
But there was one question I couldn't answer.
Why?
Why would Victoria hide my brother?
Why would she bring Emily into my house?
Why would she create this elaborate illusion of a perfect marriage?
Unless…
The marriage itself was part of the plan.
I looked at the photograph from the folder again.
Me standing beside another woman.
A woman from my past.
A woman I hadn't seen in years.
The investigation report had details about my life before Victoria.
But it was missing one thing.
The reason.
The reason someone would spend years studying me.
And now I was starting to understand.
Victoria didn't fall in love with me.
She selected me.
Like a business decision.
Like an investment.
Like a company acquisition.
And I was the company.
“Sir?”
I looked up.
Emily stood in the doorway.
She looked exhausted.
She hadn't slept.
Neither had I.
“Come in.”
She stepped inside carefully.
“Are you okay?”
I almost laughed.
Was I okay?
My wife had abused someone in my house.
My marriage was possibly a lie.
My brother, who I believed was gone forever, had a child with a woman working for me.
No.
I was not okay.
But I couldn't say that.
Not with my children sleeping upstairs.
“I need you to tell me everything.”
Emily lowered her eyes.
“I was afraid this day would come.”
“What day?”
“The day you found out.”
“Why?”
“Because I knew it would destroy you.”
I leaned forward.
“Emily, my entire life is already destroyed.”
She looked at me.
“Then you need the truth.”
I nodded.
“Start from the beginning.”
“His name was Daniel.”
The room became colder.
My brother's name.
Daniel Cole.
My younger brother.
My only sibling.
Growing up, everyone thought Daniel and I were close.
And we were.
At least, we used to be.
He was the charming one.
The one who could walk into a room and make everyone smile.
I was the serious one.
The responsible one.
After our father died, I took over the company.
Daniel hated that.
At first, I thought he was just hurt.
Then I discovered he had been stealing from the company.
Millions.
I confronted him.
We fought.
And that night…
He disappeared.
The police searched.
The company searched.
Everyone assumed he left because he was guilty.
I never saw him again.
I never knew if he was alive.
Until now.
“Daniel was alive,” Emily whispered.
My hands tightened.
“How?”
“I don't know.”
“Where is he?”
She looked away.
“Sir…”
“Where is my brother?”
“I don't know.”
The answer hurt.
But I could tell she wasn't lying.
“What happened?”
Emily took a deep breath.
“After Daniel left your family, he came to me.”
“Why?”
“Because he was sick.”
I frowned.
“Sick?”
“Not physically.”
She paused.
“He was broken.”
I stayed silent.
“He told me he had lost everything.”
I looked down.
“Because of me.”
Emily shook her head.
“No.”
Her voice was firm.
“He told me he destroyed his own life.”
That surprised me.
“Daniel admitted that?”
“Yes.”
“What happened between you two?”
Emily looked uncomfortable.
“He helped me when Noah was born.”
I froze.
“You knew him before Noah?”
She nodded.
“He wasn't the monster everyone believed.”
My expression hardened.
“You don't know what he did.”
“No.”
She looked at me.
“But I know what he regretted.”
I looked away.
For years, I had hated Daniel.
Hated him for betraying our family.
Hated him for leaving me with the company.
Hated him for making me believe I had lost my brother.
But now…
I didn't know what was true anymore.
“Where does Victoria fit into this?”
Emily's face changed.
“That's the part I was afraid to tell you.”
“Tell me.”
“She knew Daniel.”
“How?”
Emily looked at me.
“Because she was the reason he disappeared.”
My heart stopped.
“What?”
Emily continued.
“Daniel didn't run away after stealing from the company.”
“He was forced out.”
“By Victoria.”
I stood up.
“That makes no sense.”
“It does.”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“Victoria didn't even know Daniel before we met.”
Emily stared at me.
“Yes, she did.”
My entire body froze.
“What?”
“She knew him before you.”
The words felt impossible.
“She knew your brother before she ever met you.”
I walked away.
“No.”
“Sir…”
“No.”
I turned back.
“How could that be?”
Emily answered quietly.
“Because Daniel was the person who introduced you to Victoria.”
I felt like the floor disappeared.
A memory flashed.
Five years ago.
A charity event.
Daniel had insisted I attend.
He said I needed to stop working and meet new people.
That night…
I met Victoria.
I always thought it was fate.
I thought it was luck.
But maybe…
It was arranged.
“She planned everything.”
Emily's words echoed.
I looked at her.
“Explain.”
“Daniel knew Victoria before that night.”
“How?”
“She approached him.”
“Why?”
“To get close to your family.”
I felt sick.
“Why?”
Emily hesitated.
“Because of the company.”
I laughed bitterly.
“Of course.”
Money.
Power.
Control.
Always the same answer.
“But why marry me?”
Emily looked at the folder.
“Because you were the only person standing between her and complete control.”
I didn't understand.
“She wanted my company?”
“Not just your company.”
“What else?”
“Your name.”
I stared at her.
“What?”
“Cole Industries is not just a business.”
She looked serious.
“Your family name carries influence. Political connections. International partnerships.”
I nodded slowly.
“So she wanted everything.”
“Yes.”
“And Daniel?”
Emily looked down.
“Daniel was supposed to help her.”
The room went silent.
My brother.
My wife.
A partnership.
A betrayal.
“What happened?”
“Daniel changed his mind.”
“Why?”
“Because he fell in love.”
I frowned.
“With you?”
Emily shook her head.
“No.”
She looked toward the nursery.
“With me.”
I didn't know what hurt more.
The betrayal.
Or the confusion.
My brother had a child.
A son.
And I never knew.
My wife knew.
Everyone knew.
Except me.
“How did Noah become involved?”
Emily's eyes filled with sadness.
“When Daniel realized what Victoria was planning, he tried to stop her.”
“What plan?”
“To destroy you.”
I felt my heart sink.
“Why?”
“Because Daniel discovered Victoria wasn't just after the company.”
“What was she after?”
Emily looked at me.
“Your children.”
I froze.
“What?”
“She believed if something happened to you, she could control everything through them.”
My blood turned cold.
“She wanted custody?”
“Yes.”
“She wanted my children?”
Emily nodded.
“She saw them as the final piece of her plan.”
I remembered Victoria's obsession with the twins.
At the time, I thought it was love.
She was always protective.
Always controlling.
Always making decisions.
I thought she was just a strict mother.
But maybe…
She wasn't protecting them.
She was possessing them.
That afternoon, I made a decision.
I couldn't confront Victoria yet.
Not without proof.
People like Victoria didn't survive by being careless.
They survived because they controlled the story.
And right now…
She controlled everything.
Except one thing.
She didn't know I knew.
I needed evidence.
I needed to understand the entire plan.
And I needed to find my brother.
Alive or dead.
Before Victoria knew I was looking.
That night, I entered Victoria's private office for the first time.
The room smelled like expensive perfume.
Everything was organized.
Perfect.
Almost too perfect.
I searched through the drawers.
Nothing.
Documents.
Nothing.
Then I noticed something.
A painting on the wall.
It was slightly crooked.
I moved it.
Behind it was a hidden safe.
My heartbeat increased.
Victoria had secrets.
I entered the code.
Wrong.
Again.
Wrong.
Then I remembered something.
Her birthday.
Wrong.
Our anniversary.
Wrong.
The twins' birthday.
Wrong.
I almost gave up.
Then I remembered something she once said.
A sentence I thought was romantic.
“The day everything changed.”
I entered the date.
The safe opened.
Inside were files.
Photographs.
Documents.
And a small black notebook.
I opened the first page.
And immediately recognized the handwriting.
Victoria's.
The first sentence destroyed me.
"Step One: Make Adrian believe he found love."
I turned the page.
"Step Two: Remove Daniel from the picture."
My hands began shaking.
I turned another page.
"Step Three: Secure access to Cole Industries through marriage."
Another page.
"Step Four: Have children. They guarantee Adrian's emotional weakness."
I stopped.
I couldn't breathe.
Then I reached the final entry.
The one written only weeks before our twins were born.
The one that revealed Victoria's true plan.
"Once the children are born, Adrian will never leave."
My vision blurred.
Because I finally understood.
The children weren't just part of our family.
To Victoria…
They were insurance.
They were leverage.
They were a way to control me forever.
Then I found something else.
A photograph.
Recent.
Taken two weeks ago.
A man standing outside our house.
A man I knew.
A man I thought I would never see again.
Daniel.
Alive.
And standing beside him…
Was Victoria.
My wife.
My brother.
Together.
Planning something.
The final document beneath the photograph had only one sentence.
"The final phase begins after Adrian discovers the truth."
I heard a sound behind me.
A door opening.
I turned around.
Victoria was standing there.
Watching me.
No surprise.
No fear.
Just a calm smile.
The same perfect smile she had worn for five years.
“Congratulations, Adrian.”
Her voice was soft.
“You finally found my secret.”
I couldn't move.
“How long have you known I was looking?”
She stepped into the room.
“Since Emily told you.”
My blood ran cold.
“What?”
Victoria smiled.
“You really thought I didn't know?”
She closed the door behind her.
“Adrian…”
“You have no idea how long I've been preparing for this moment.”
I stared at my wife.
And for the first time…
I wasn't looking at the woman I married.
I was looking at my enemy.
May you like
And she was smiling.
Because she believed she had already won.
