Chapter 8 - The Awakening of Margaret

Three weeks after the emergency hearing, the air in the Brookstone Private Hospitalâs neurological wing was filled with the sharp, clean scent of antiseptic and fresh lilies. Margaret Higgins lay in a state-of-the-art recovery bed, her pale, wrinkled face framed by soft silver hair. The complex six-hour surgery to remove the scar tissue mass from her spine had been completed forty-eight hours prior, and today was the day the medical team would test her nerve responses.
Lily stood at the foot of the bed, her small hands gripping the metal railing so tightly her knuckles turned white. Daniel stood beside her, his arm resting protectively around her shoulders, while Noah sat in a small chair nearby, eating a raspberry pastry from a fresh box.
Dr. Evelyn Vance pulled back the sterile white sheets, exposing Margaretâs thin, scarred legs. She took a small neurological mallet from her pocket and gently tapped the reflex point just below Margaretâs right knee.
For a second, nothing happened. The room remained completely still, the only sound being the rhythmic hum of the heart monitor.
Lily held her breath, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. Please, she prayed silently. Please let Grandma move.
Dr. Vance tapped the knee a second time, slightly harder.
Suddenly, Margaretâs right big toe twitched. Then, her entire right foot flexed upward, the muscle contracting in a sudden, beautiful display of restored neurological life.
Margaret let out a sharp, choked gasp, her hands flying to her mouth as tears immediately welled in her faded green eyes. "Oh my lord... Lily... I felt it. I felt the cold air on my skin. I felt the touch..."
"Grandma!" Lily shrieked, breaking away from the railing and throwing herself into her grandmotherâs open arms. The two of them clutched each other tightly, weeping with a depth of joy that washed away five years of darkness, hunger, and isolation in a single instant.
Daniel turned his head away, wiping a stray tear from his own eye, while Noah clapped his hands happily. "Look, Daddy! The dragon is fixed! The castle is safe!"
Dr. Vance smiled warmly, replacing the sheet. "The nerve pathway is completely clear, Margaret. The muscle atrophy is significant, but with intensive physical therapy right here in our rehabilitation pavilion, you will be standing on your own feet within two months. And by the time the autumn leaves fall, youâll be walking through the garden of your new home."
Margaret looked up from her granddaughterâs embrace, her gaze locking onto Daniel Carter. She reached out a trembling, worn hand toward the billionaire. "Mr. Carter... I don't know how to thank you. Your grandfather was a good man... he promised me he would always look after my family, but when the papers vanished, I thought the world had forgotten us."

Daniel walked over, taking her fragile hand in his large, warm grip. "The world didn't forget you, Margaret. The wrong people took control for a little while, but the foundation my grandfather built was stronger than their greed. You saved his life in 1982, and your beautiful granddaughter saved my sonâs life three weeks ago. The Carter family owes everything we are to the Higgins family. And I promise you, as long as I draw breath, you will never want for anything again."
Lily looked up from her grandmotherâs shoulder, her face glowing with a smile so bright it seemed to illuminate the entire hospital room. The heavy wooden box of marzipan candies sat on the dresser nearby, no longer a symbol of survival, but a historic relic of a family that had fought its way through the thorns and finally reached the roses.
