Chapter 3 - The Traitor in Silk

Before Vanessa could reach the exit of the precinct, Detective Vance and three uniformed officers intercepted her, their movements swift and practiced. Vanessa’s aristocratic composure dissolved into a shrieking, chaotic display of privilege as her arms were forced behind her back.

"Get your hands off me!" she screamed, her designer sunglasses flying off her face and shattering against the linoleum floor. "Do you know who I am? My father is the chief judicial trustee for the entire county! Daniel, tell them to stop! That video is a deepfake! It’s a digital manipulation by your security team to destroy our marriage!"

Daniel didn't look at her. He didn't even acknowledge the sound of her voice as she was dragged down the hallway toward the processing unit. He stood completely still in the center of the interrogation room, his fists clenched so tightly that his fingernails pierced the skin of his palms, drawing tiny beads of dark blood.

"Mr. Carter," Arthur Pendelton said gently, setting the tablet down on the table. "The forensics are ironclad. The metadata shows the video was captured precisely twelve minutes before Lily arrived at the Brookstone private hospital. Vanessa didn't just leave Noah to die; she actively coordinated with your head of security, Captain Thomas, to ensure the park perimeter was completely unmonitored for a twenty-minute window."

Daniel closed his eyes, a deep, ragged breath tearing from his throat. For two years, he had believed Vanessa Sterling was the savior of his broken family—the woman who would help him raise Noah after his first wife passed away. Instead, she was a predator, a calculating monster who viewed his five-year-old son as nothing more than an inconvenient obstacle to a multi-billion-dollar corporate empire.

He turned his head slowly, his gaze falling upon Lily. The little girl was still sitting on the metal bench, her small body shivering under the harsh fluorescent lights. Her wrists were still bound by the heavy steel handcuffs that Daniel himself had demanded the police use on her.

A profound, suffocating wave of shame washed over the billionaire. He walked over to the table, his expensive leather shoes clicking softly against the floor, and sank onto his knees right in front of the eight-year-old street vendor.

"Officer," Daniel said, his voice cracking with emotion. "Unlock these cuffs. Right now."

The younger officer quickly stepped forward with the key, releasing the heavy metal from Lily’s red, swollen wrists. As soon as her hands were free, Lily didn't try to run or protect herself. She simply rubbed her wrists and looked at Daniel with wide, intelligent eyes.

"I’m sorry, sir," Lily whispered. "I tried to run faster, but the pavement was very hot and my shoes broke last week. I didn't mean to let him go unconscious."

Daniel felt a sob catch in his throat. This child, who had nothing, who lived on the cruel fringes of the city selling marzipan candies for pennies, was apologizing to him—the man who had just called her a criminal and a thief.

"No, Lily," Daniel said, his voice thick with tears as he reached out, his large hands gently covering her small, dirt-stained fingers. "You don't apologize to me. You saved my boy. While the people I paid millions of dollars to protect him turned their backs, you carried him on your back under the blazing sun. You are the only reason my son is alive right now."

He turned to Detective Vance. "I want the best medical team in the city dispatched to take care of this girl immediately. Clean her wounds, dress her in the finest clothes available, and have my private car bring her to Noah’s VIP pavilion at the hospital. From this moment on, she is under the personal protection of the Carter family."

"Understood, Mr. Carter," Vance said, his expression filled with a mixture of respect and relief. "We’ll handle her processing as a primary state witness immediately. No charges, full protective custody."

As Arthur helped Lily up from the bench, Daniel stood up, his eyes turning back into cold, calculating flint. "Arthur, call the corporate legal team. I want every asset associated with the Sterling family frozen by noon. I want Captain Thomas and every security guard on that shift in custody before the sun sets. And then, I want you to find out exactly who else inside my company knew about this."

"Consider it done, sir," Arthur replied with a grim nod.

Daniel looked down at Lily one last time, a faint, genuine smile breaking through his exhaustion. "Go get cleaned up, brave girl. Noah is waiting for his hero."
