Chapter 5 – “A Father’s Last Chance”

The message remained on my phone for exactly seven minutes.

Seven minutes of staring at five simple words.

You have no idea what Ethan Parker really did.

I read it again.

And again.

Searching for some hidden meaning.

Some clue.

Some explanation that would make my stomach stop twisting.

But there was nothing.

Just a threat.

A warning.

Or maybe a trap.

I had learned something during the last two years.

Not everyone who reveals a secret does it because they care about the truth.

Sometimes people expose darkness because they want to create more of it.

I placed my phone face down on the kitchen counter.

Across the room, Lily was sleeping peacefully.

Her small body curled beneath her favorite blanket.

Her stuffed rabbit tucked under her arm.

She had no idea that the adults around her were surrounded by complicated emotions.

Love.

Regret.

Anger.

Betrayal.

She only knew one thing.

She had a mommy who loved her.

And now…

she had a daddy who was trying to earn her trust.

That was all she needed.

At least for now.

The next morning, Ethan arrived earlier than expected.

Normally, I would have been annoyed.

But something about his expression stopped me.

He looked worried.

Not about the media.

Not about his company.

About me.

“Harper.”

I opened the door but didn’t invite him in immediately.

“What happened?”

His eyebrows tightened.

“What do you mean?”

“You look like you haven’t slept.”

A small, humorless smile appeared.

“I haven’t.”

That surprised me.

Ethan Parker had always been someone who controlled everything.

His schedule.

His emotions.

His image.

Seeing him uncertain felt unfamiliar.

“Is Lily okay?”

“Yes.”

The relief on his face was immediate.

“Then what is it?”

I hesitated.

I could have kept the message from him.

Part of me wanted to.

Because involving Ethan meant opening a door I had spent years trying to close.

But this wasn’t only about me anymore.

It was about Lily.

I handed him my phone.

He read the message.

His face changed.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

That was the first thing I noticed.

“You know something.”

His eyes lifted.

“No.”

“Ethan.”

He looked away.

And I knew.

“Tell me.”

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he sighed.

“There’s something I never told you.”

My heart sank.

Of course there was.

There was always something.

“When?”

“Before we divorced.”

I stared at him.

“Before?”

He nodded slowly.

“It wasn’t about Jessica.”

“Then what?”

He walked inside.

I closed the door.

“Three years ago, before I left…”

His voice became quieter.

“My company was almost destroyed.”

I frowned.

“What are you talking about?”

“I never told you because I didn’t want you to worry.”

I almost laughed.

“Ethan, I was your wife.”

“I know.”

“Then why didn’t you trust me?”

The question hurt him.

Because it was the same question I had asked for years.

Why didn’t he trust me with his struggles?

Why didn’t he let me stand beside him?

“I thought I had to fix everything myself.”

I crossed my arms.

“And instead?”

He looked down.

“I pushed away the one person who would have helped me.”

The honesty was painful.

Because it came too late.

“What happened?”

He took a deep breath.

“Someone inside Parker Global was selling confidential information.”

My expression changed.

“Someone betrayed you?”

“Yes.”

“Did you find out who?”

“Not completely.”

The message suddenly made more sense.

“This person?”

“Maybe.”

Silence filled the room.

Then Ethan added:

“And there’s more.”

I waited.

“There were financial records.”

“What records?”

“Payments.”

“To who?”

He looked at me.

“Jessica.”

The room went cold.

I had expected many things.

I had expected Jessica to lie.

Manipulate.

Control.

But this?

This was different.

“What are you saying?”

“I’m saying I don’t know if Jessica was involved.”

“You were with her for two years.”

“I know.”

“And you don’t know?”

His expression tightened.

“I wanted to believe she wasn’t.”

That answer bothered me.

Not because I cared about Jessica.

Because I recognized the feeling.

The same blindness he had when he chose her.

The same blindness that made him ignore the truth.

“You always want to believe the version of people that makes your choices easier.”

He looked hurt.

But he didn’t argue.

Because he knew.

That afternoon, Ethan’s world began collapsing.

Not publicly.

Not yet.

But privately.

His legal team discovered hidden transfers.

Small amounts.

Thousands at first.

Then hundreds of thousands.

Money moved through different accounts.

The trail eventually led back to someone connected with Jessica.

Not directly.

But close enough.

Too close.

The woman who claimed she loved him had been hiding something.

And Ethan had no idea.

Three days later, Jessica requested a meeting.

With me.

I almost refused.

Almost.

But curiosity won.

Because I needed to know why.

Why she had done everything.

Why she had destroyed a marriage.

Why she had hidden my daughter from her own father.

We met at a quiet café far from the city.

Jessica arrived wearing sunglasses and a designer coat.

But she looked different.

Less powerful.

More desperate.

“You look well,” she said.

I didn’t respond.

She sat down.

“You hate me.”

I looked at her.

“No.”

That surprised her.

“I should.”

“Maybe.”

“But hate is too much energy.”

A bitter smile appeared.

“You’ve changed.”

“Yes.”

“Because of Ethan?”

I shook my head.

“No.”

“Then what?”

I looked at her.

“Because of Lily.”

For the first time, Jessica looked uncomfortable.

“She’s beautiful.”

“Yes.”

“She looks like him.”

“Yes.”

A long silence followed.

Then she whispered:

“I didn’t know what to do.”

I almost laughed.

“You had choices.”

“I was afraid.”

“Of what?”

“Losing everything.”

There it was.

The same excuse everyone used.

Fear.

Fear made people selfish.

Fear made people cruel.

Fear made them hurt innocent people.

“You already had everything.”

She looked at me.

“You had him.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“I had someone who chose someone else.”

Jessica looked down.

“I loved him.”

“Maybe.”

I paused.

“But you loved winning more.”

Her eyes filled slightly.

And I knew I had hit the truth.

Then Jessica said something I didn’t expect.

“There’s something else.”

My body became still.

“What?”

She looked around before speaking.

“Ethan wasn’t the only person being investigated.”

I frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“Someone wanted him destroyed.”

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“I don’t care whether you believe me.”

Her voice became urgent.

“Because whoever is behind this doesn’t just want Ethan’s company.”

A chill ran through me.

“What do they want?”

She looked directly into my eyes.

“They want his family.”

That night, Ethan came to my apartment.

He looked exhausted.

But there was something different.

Determination.

“I need to tell you something.”

I stepped aside.

“What now?”

He looked at Lily’s bedroom door.

“She’s asleep?”

“Yes.”

He nodded.

Then he handed me a folder.

Inside were documents.

Legal documents.

Financial records.

And one photograph.

My blood ran cold.

The photograph showed Ethan.

Years ago.

Before our divorce.

Standing outside a building.

Talking to someone.

Someone I recognized.

My hands tightened around the paper.

“Who is this?”

Ethan’s voice was low.

“My former business partner.”

I stared at the picture.

“What does he have to do with this?”

Ethan looked at me.

“He was the one person who knew about our fertility problems.”

I froze.

“What?”

“He knew everything.”

The room became silent.

Then Ethan whispered:

“And he was the first person who told me maybe I should stop wasting my life trying to fix something that wasn’t going to happen.”

My eyes widened.

Because suddenly…

the cracks in the foundation looked different.

Maybe Ethan hadn’t simply fallen in love with Jessica.

Maybe someone had pushed him.

Someone had planted doubts.

Someone had benefited from destroying our marriage.

And now…

that person knew about Lily.

The next morning, the biggest news story of the year broke.

Not about Ethan.

Not about Jessica.

About me.

A leaked document appeared online.

A document that claimed I had hidden Ethan’s daughter for financial gain.

The headline was brutal:

HARPER PARKER: LOVING MOTHER OR BILLIONAIRE EX-WIFE SEEKING CONTROL?

The internet exploded.

People who knew nothing about me judged me.

Strangers called me selfish.

Greedy.

Manipulative.

And for the first time in two years…

I felt afraid.

Not for myself.

For Lily.

Because someone wasn’t just attacking my reputation.

They were trying to rewrite my daughter’s story.

Ethan called me immediately.

“Harper.”

His voice was urgent.

“Don’t read anything online.”

“It’s already too late.”

“I’m fixing this.”

I closed my eyes.

“No.”

A pause.

“No?”

I looked at Lily.

Playing quietly on the floor.

“No, Ethan.”

My voice became firm.

“This time…”

I looked back at him.

“We fix it together.”

Silence.

Then, softly:

“Together?”

“Yes.”

Because for the first time…

we weren’t fighting each other.

We were fighting for the same thing.

Our daughter.

But neither of us knew…

the person behind the attack was already preparing their final move.

May you like

And their next target wasn’t Ethan.

It was Lily.
