Chapter 4 – “The Woman He Betrayed”

The word was still hanging in the air.

“Daddy.”

One simple word.

Four letters.

But it shattered the carefully constructed world Ethan Parker had built around himself.

The ballroom that had been filled with laughter, champagne glasses, and the sound of celebration suddenly became unbearably quiet.

Hundreds of people stared.

Investors.

Reporters.

Business partners.

Friends.

Everyone was watching the same scene.

The powerful billionaire CEO standing frozen in the middle of his own anniversary gala.

And the little girl holding his hand.

His daughter.

Lily.

I watched Ethan’s face carefully.

For years, I had wondered what he would feel when he finally met her.

Would he be angry?

Would he blame me?

Would he deny her?

Would he try to protect his reputation before protecting her?

I had prepared myself for every possibility.

But I had never imagined this.

I had never imagined seeing Ethan Parker completely speechless.

Because for the first time in his life…

money couldn’t fix anything.

Power couldn’t solve anything.

And charm couldn’t save him.

He was simply a father standing in front of the child he had missed.

“Daddy?”

Lily looked up at him again.

Her tiny fingers were wrapped around his.

Ethan slowly lowered himself until he was at her eye level.

His expensive suit touched the polished marble floor.

He didn’t care.

Nothing else mattered.

“Hi, Lily.”

His voice was barely a whisper.

“I’m Ethan.”

She smiled.

“I know.”

A small laugh escaped from someone in the crowd.

But Ethan didn’t notice.

“You know?”

She nodded.

“Mommy showed me your picture.”

My heart tightened.

Because that was true.

I had never lied to Lily.

I had never told her Ethan didn’t exist.

I had simply waited until she was old enough to understand.

“Do you like my picture?” Ethan asked.

Lily thought seriously.

Then she nodded.

“You look serious.”

A few people nearby smiled.

Ethan actually laughed.

A real laugh.

The first one I had heard from him in years.

“I probably do.”

“You need to smile more.”

The room softened.

Even the reporters stopped taking pictures for a moment.

Because there was something impossible to fake about that scene.

A little girl teaching a billionaire how to be human.

But not everyone was touched.

Across the room, Jessica Reynolds stood completely still.

Her face was beautiful.

Perfectly controlled.

But I saw it.

Fear.

Pure fear.

Because unlike everyone else, Jessica wasn’t surprised that Lily existed.

She was terrified that Lily existed publicly.

And that told me everything.

The moment Ethan stepped away with Lily, Jessica grabbed his arm.

“We need to talk.”

He looked at her coldly.

“Not now.”

“Yes. Now.”

Her voice was low.

Urgent.

“You don’t understand what’s happening.”

Ethan removed her hand from his arm.

“No.”

His expression hardened.

“I understand perfectly.”

Jessica’s face changed.

“Ethan—”

“You knew.”

Two words.

But they carried years of betrayal.

Jessica looked around.

People were watching.

She lowered her voice.

“I didn’t know for certain.”

“You knew enough.”

“That’s not fair.”

His jaw tightened.

“Fair?”

The anger in his voice surprised even me.

“You knew there was a chance I had a child.”

Jessica looked away.

“I thought it was complicated.”

“Complicated?”

Ethan laughed bitterly.

“My daughter existed, Jessica.”

Silence.

“My daughter was born.”

His voice broke.

“She took her first steps. She said her first words. She had birthdays.”

Every sentence was a wound.

“And you knew there was a possibility.”

Jessica crossed her arms.

“You weren’t with Harper anymore.”

“That doesn’t matter.”

“It does.”

“No.”

His voice became stronger.

“It doesn’t.”

The people around us could feel the tension.

The perfect couple from magazine covers was cracking.

Right in front of everyone.

Later that evening, after the gala ended, Ethan came to my office.

Not his office.

Mine.

That detail mattered.

Two years ago, he would have expected me to come to him.

Now he stood outside my door waiting.

A small change.

But a meaningful one.

“Come in.”

He entered.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then he said:

“She’s amazing.”

I looked at him.

“Yes.”

“She’s funny.”

A small smile appeared on his face.

“She told me my suit was boring.”

I almost smiled.

“That sounds like her.”

“She has your attitude.”

“She has yours too.”

That surprised him.

“Really?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“She’s stubborn.”

A quiet laugh escaped him.

“I deserve that.”

The room became quiet again.

Then his expression changed.

“I’m sorry.”

I looked down.

“Ethan—”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“Please let me say this.”

I stayed silent.

“I spent two years thinking I lost my marriage because we couldn’t have a child.”

His voice became rough.

“But the truth is…”

He swallowed.

“I lost my marriage because I gave up before I knew the truth.”

The honesty caught me off guard.

“I was selfish.”

“Yes.”

He nodded.

“I was.”

No excuses.

No blame.

Just acceptance.

That was different.

“I hurt you.”

“Yes.”

“I abandoned you.”

“Yes.”

“I abandoned her.”

His voice cracked.

That was the first time he said it.

Not “the situation.”

Not “the circumstances.”

Her.

His daughter.

“You didn’t know.”

“But I should have asked.”

I had no answer.

Because he was right.

The next morning, the scandal exploded.

But not because of Lily.

Because of Jessica.

Someone leaked old emails.

Messages between Jessica and a private investigator.

Messages from two years earlier.

The content was devastating.

Jessica had hired someone to monitor Harper’s medical appointments after Ethan left.

She knew Harper had visited an obstetrician.

She knew there was a pregnancy possibility.

She knew.

The headlines changed immediately.

JESSICA REYNOLDS KNEW ABOUT ETHAN PARKER’S SECRET DAUGHTER?

THE AFFAIR THAT DESTROYED A MARRIAGE HID AN EVEN BIGGER SECRET

BILLIONAIRE CEO BETRAYED TWICE

I read the articles silently.

I wasn’t happy.

Strangely…

I wasn’t.

Because seeing someone exposed didn’t heal what happened.

Nothing could give me back those two years.

Nothing could give Lily back those moments.

But justice wasn’t about revenge.

Justice was about truth.

That afternoon, Ethan came to my apartment.

He looked exhausted.

“I ended things with Jessica.”

I wasn’t surprised.

“She moved out.”

I nodded.

“She said she loved me.”

I remained quiet.

“She said she made mistakes because she was afraid of losing me.”

“And what did you say?”

He looked at me.

“I told her I lost the woman I loved because I was afraid of facing my own problems.”

That answer surprised me.

“You loved her?”

A painful expression crossed his face.

“I thought I did.”

I looked away.

“Sometimes we confuse being rescued with being loved.”

He was silent.

Because that was exactly what had happened.

Jessica had appeared when Ethan was vulnerable.

She had made him feel admired.

Needed.

Powerful.

But real love was different.

Real love stayed when things were difficult.

Real love held your hand through pain.

Real love didn’t ask you to abandon someone else.

A few days later, Ethan asked if he could take Lily to the park.

Alone.

I hesitated.

Not because I thought he would hurt her.

But because trusting him again was difficult.

Trust was not a light switch.

It was a building.

And Ethan had spent years destroying it.

But I also knew something.

Lily deserved a father.

If Ethan was willing to become one…

she deserved the chance.

“Two hours.”

He nodded.

“Two hours.”

“And if she wants to come home?”

“I bring her home immediately.”

I studied him.

“You’re serious?”

“Yes.”

His eyes softened.

“Harper, I missed two years.”

The pain in his voice was real.

“I don’t want to miss another minute.”

When they returned, Lily was carrying a flower.

“For Mommy.”

I smiled.

“Where did you get that?”

“Daddy helped me pick it.”

The word still felt strange.

Daddy.

But this time…

it didn’t hurt.

Ethan stood behind her.

Watching us.

And for a moment, I saw the man I once married.

Not the man who left.

The man who could have been.

The man who was finally trying.

That night, after Lily fell asleep, I received a message.

From an unknown number.

One sentence.

You think the truth came out? You have no idea what Ethan Parker really did.

I stared at the screen.

My heart slowed.

Because I knew.

This wasn’t over.

Jessica’s betrayal was only the beginning.

There were more secrets.

More lies.

And somewhere in Ethan’s past…

there was something even he didn’t know.

Something that could destroy everything.

Including the fragile relationship we were beginning to rebuild.

I looked at Lily sleeping peacefully.

Then at the message again.

Two years ago, I protected my daughter from Ethan’s mistakes.

Now…

May you like

I might have to protect her from someone else’s revenge.

Because the war had only just begun.
