Chapter 4 - The Whispering Shadows

Three weeks passed. The babies—named Leo, Arthur, and Maya—thrived under the round-the-clock care of elite pediatric nurses provided by Alexander. Claire moved out of the hospital and into Alexander’s private penthouse overlooking Central Park—a secure, palatial residence where her children lacked nothing.
Yet, as the physical danger passed, Ethan Mercer’s corporate walls were crumbling fast.
Desperate to save his firm, Ethan scheduled a massive charity gala in Manhattan—the annual Bellevue Masquerade—hoping to network with international investors and secure a emergency rescue loan. He flew back to New York with Sabrina on his arm, determined to put on a show of unshakeable wealth and success.
"We just need to convince the Asian syndicate to buy our corporate bonds," Ethan told Sabrina in their luxury suite. "Once the ink is dry, Mercer Global will be safe, and we can forget this nightmare."
"And what about your ex-wife?" Sabrina asked, applying lip gloss. "What if she shows up begging for alimony?"
Ethan sneered into the mirror as he adjusted his tuxedo. "Claire doesn't have the guts or the money to hire a lawyer. She’s probably living in a homeless shelter. She's ancient history."
That night, the Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was bathed in gold and crystal light. Hundreds of New York’s elite gathered in high fashion. Ethan strutted through the crowd like a king, sipping champagne and dropping hints about his upcoming projects, trying desperately to cover up the gaping financial sinkhole in his ledger.
Suddenly, the grand double doors of the ballroom swung open, and the hum of conversation died down instantly.
A collective gasp swept through the room.
Walking into the ballroom was Alexander Vance. But it wasn't his formidable presence that stunned the crowd—it was the woman on his arm.
Claire stepped into the light, breathtakingly stunning. She wore an emerald green silk gown that draped flawlessly over her restored, elegant figure. Her dark hair was swept up in an intricate, regal crown, studded with diamonds that caught the light like stars. Gone was the broken, trembling woman in the rain. Standing beside the most powerful man in the city, she looked like royalty.
And right behind them, pushed by two immaculate pediatric nurses, were two bespoke, silver pram strollers carrying three pristine, beautifully dressed infants.
Ethan’s champagne glass slipped from his fingers, crashing violently onto the marble floor.
"C-Claire?" Ethan gasped, his face turning as pale as a corpse.
Sabrina’s jaw dropped in sheer horror. "What is she doing here?! And who... who is that man?!"
Ethan didn't answer. His eyes were wide with shock, fixated on the sight of his ex-wife standing next to the ruthless billionaire who had been secretly strangling his business for the past two months.

Alexander took Claire’s hand, kissing her knuckles gently in front of every camera flash in the room, before turning his icy, mocking gaze directly onto Ethan Mercer.
The hunt was over. The execution was about to begin.
