Chapter 5 - The Queen Returns

Two weeks later, the rain had cleared, leaving behind a crisp, sunny morning.

Claire stood in the grand foyer of the Highland Park mansion. Her lip had healed, leaving only a faint, subtle mark, and the color had returned to her face. She wore a sharp, tailored ivory suit—a stark contrast to the quiet, modest dresses Grant had always insisted she wear to blend into the background.

Beside her stood Marcus and a team of movers.

Under a court-ordered foreclosure asset seizure, the entire estate and all its contents had been reclaimed by the Vance Family Trust. Everything Grant had bought, built, or stolen was being liquidated to pay off his debts to her family.

The heavy front door opened, and Grant walked in, flanked by his criminal defense attorney. He was pale, his clothes hung loosely on his frame, and the polished confidence he once possessed was completely gone. He was out on a million-dollar bail—a bail secured only by mortgaging his mother’s small home in Austin.

When he saw Claire, he froze.

"Claire..." he gasped, taking a quick step forward, but Marcus immediately stepped between them, his hand resting inside his coat jacket.

"Keep your distance, Grant," Marcus warned coldness itself.

Grant stopped, staring at his wife. "Claire, please... you have to stop this. They’ve frozen everything. I don't even have enough money to pay my legal defense team! My reputation is ruined!"

Claire walked slowly toward him, her footsteps echoing against the polished marble floor—the same marble where he had knocked her down fourteen nights ago.

"You look tired, Grant," Claire said, her voice steady, possessing a terrifying calmness.

"Claire, I made a terrible mistake!" Grant wept, dropping to his knees on the cold floor, shedding genuine tears of desperation. "Vanessa seduced me! She manipulated me! I was under so much stress with the business... I lost my mind that night! I love you! I’ve always loved you!"

Claire looked down at him kneeling at her feet. She remembered the cold rain, the smell of her mother's crystal glasses, the cruel laughter of Vanessa in her robe.

She pulled a small black velvet box from her pocket. She opened it, revealing his gold wedding band—the one he had been wearing when he threw her into the dark.

She held it over his head and dropped it. The ring clinked against the marble, rolling until it hit his knee.

"You told me I should learn my place, Grant," Claire whispered, leaning down slightly so only he could hear her. "I did. My place is at the top of the empire you tried to steal. And your place... is in a cell."
