Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Execution

The board room at Whitmore Enterprises was suffocating. Ten senior executives and board members sat around the dark walnut table, their faces grim, staring at laptops showing red market tickers.

When Grant walked in, holding a cold ice pack to his bruising jaw, nobody stood up.

"What is the meaning of this?" Grant demanded, throwing his briefcase onto the table. "David, clear the room of external advisors. We need to restructure our emergency capital."

An elderly man sitting at the head of the table cleared his throat. It was Harrison Vance—Claire’s uncle and the board’s largest independent shareholder.

"Sit down, Grant," Harrison said, his voice gravelly and devoid of warmth.

"Harrison, thank God," Grant sighed, taking a seat. "You need to talk to Arthur. Claire is lying about what happened last night. She threw a fit over a personal matter, and now Arthur is using Vance Global assets to sabotage our operational logistics!"

"Claire isn't lying," Harrison said calmly. He reached for a remote and clicked a button.

The large presentation screen on the wall flickered to life. High-resolution photographs filled the display: Claire’s swollen cheek, the cut across her lip, the severe black and purple bruising along her ribcage, and the official forensic report signed by the chief of trauma at Dallas General.

The room was deathly quiet. Several board members looked away in disgust.

Grant’s heart stopped. "Where... where did you get those?"

"The police department," Harrison replied. "A criminal complaint for aggravated assault and felony domestic battery was filed an hour ago. Along with a formal request from Vance Logistics to liquidate all co-owned asset vehicles."

"This is private!" Grant shouted, standing up, his knuckles turning white as he leaned over the table. "My personal life has nothing to do with this company's performance!"

"It does when your company’s entire valuation is built on Vance supply lines," David, the CFO, interjected, his voice trembling with anger. "Grant, our stock dropped forty percent in pre-market trading after news leaked that Vance Global severed ties with us. Our credit rating was downgraded to junk ten minutes ago!"

Harrison stood up, pulling a stack of formal documents from his jacket. "Under Article 4, Section 2 of the corporate bylaws, any executive officer indicted on felony charges that cause material reputational harm to the firm is subject to immediate termination for cause."

"You can't do this!" Grant screamed. "I founded this company!"

"And we are burying it," Harrison said coldly. "By unanimous vote of the board, your voting rights are suspended, your salary is frozen, and you are relieved of your duties as Chief Executive Officer. Security will escort you off the premises."

Two uniform officers walked into the room. Grant looked around at the faces of the men he considered his friends, his loyal lieutenants. Not a single person met his eyes.
