Chapter 7 - The Cleansing Fire

By 6:00 PM, the boardroom was empty.
The directors had fled the floor within minutes of the arrests, terrified of being tainted by association with the unfolding federal scandal. The FBI had already seized the seventh-floor servers, the financial accounts, and the physical offices of Thomas Callahan and Victoria Hale.
Declan stood alone at the end of the long mahogany table, staring out into the rainy gloom of Boston Harbor. The storm was finally clearing, leaving the sky bruised purple and gold above the horizon.
The door opened softly.
Sarah walked in, carrying two paper cups of black coffee. She looked exhausted, her face pale, but for the first time in months, the dark circles under her eyes seemed less prominent, as if a crushing weight had been lifted from her shoulders.
She walked over, handing one of the cups to Declan before leaning against the mahogany surface beside him.
"The federal prosecutor called," Sarah said quietly, sipping her coffee. "They said with the digital trail we provided, coupled with the signed corporate registry for Meridian Trust, the case is airtight. Thomas and your aunt won't see bail for the rest of their lives."
Declan took a slow sip of the bitter coffee, staring down into the dark liquid.
"They burned my family name to the ground," Declan said, his voice flat. "Everything my father built, everything I spent fifteen years protecting... it's tainted. Every shipping contract, every dock worker, every investor in the city is going to look at Hale Maritime and see a criminal syndicate."
"Then we burn it down," Sarah said calmly.
Declan turned his head to look at her, surprised. "Burn it down?"
"You heard the prosecutor," Sarah said, turning to face him fully, her gray eyes shining with quiet strength. "The federal asset seizure laws mean the government is going to tie up Hale Maritime in civil forfeiture proceedings for at least two years. The board is terrified. The investors are pulling out. The company as you knew it is already dead, Declan."
She reached out, placing her hand gently over his clenched fist on the table.
"Let the federal government take the wreckage. Let them liquidate the holding companies, the shell accounts, and the toxic assets. You still have your personal capital, your independence, and your name. We take what’s clean, we walk away from the ashes, and we build something new. Something real."
Declan stared at her for a long, silent moment. The anger that had consumed him for the past twenty-four hours slowly began to recede, replaced by a profound, grounding clarity. He looked at the woman who had nearly died sitting at her desk—the woman who had carried his child through poison and betrayal without once breaking her stride.

He unclasped his fist, turning his hand over to interlace his fingers tightly with hers.
"My father always told me that a house built on stolen timber will always burn to the ground," Declan whispered, a faint, genuine smile finally breaking across his face. "I guess he was right. It’s time to let the fire take it."
