Chapter 6 - The Cornered Rat

For three agonizing seconds, no one moved.
Then, Thomas Callahan did something unexpected. He didn't stutter, he didn't beg, and he didn't try to fumble for an excuse. Instead, his shoulders slumped, a slow, dark chuckle escaping his throat. He leaned back in his leather chair, crossed his legs, and looked directly at Declan with an expression of pure, unadulterated contempt.
"You always were too smart for your own good, Deck," Thomas said smoothly, the folksy charm completely gone, replaced by a ruthless, corporate predator. "You inherit a shipping empire because your daddy died with a silver spoon in his mouth, and you think you earned every ton of steel on those freighters."
He looked around the table at the shocked faces of the board members.
"Wake up, people! Hale Maritime was rotting from the inside out before I came along. Declan’s expansion strategy in the Caribbean was a financial disaster waiting to happen. Victoria and I were just performing surgery—cutting out the dead tissue so the corporation could survive under new, competent leadership."
"Surgery?" Victoria hissed, turning on Thomas with venomous fury, realizing he had just confessed on the record in front of the entire board. "You fool! You were supposed to handle her quietly! You were supposed to make it look like a miscarriage and a nervous breakdown!"
"Shut up, Victoria!" Thomas snapped back, his mask finally cracking. "The moment Declan brought her to Boston, she was too close to the books! She was auditing the reinsurance claims before I could scrub the database! It was either poison her slowly or watch our entire operation get dragged before a federal grand jury!"
Declan stood motionless at the head of the table. He hadn't raised his voice. He hadn't lunged across the mahogany to tear Thomas’s throat out—though every muscle in his body screamed for him to do just that.
He reached into his breast pocket, pulled out his smartphone, and tapped the screen twice.
The heavy oak doors of the boardroom clicked open.
Four uniformed federal marshals, accompanied by two Boston Police homicide detectives, stepped into the room. Their badges gleamed under the recessed ceiling lights.
"Thomas Callahan. Victoria Hale," the lead detective said, his voice echoing across the silent boardroom as he stepped toward the table with handcuffs dangling from his belt. "You are under arrest for corporate fraud, money laundering, conspiracy, and attempted murder. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."
Thomas stared at the approaching officers, then looked up at Declan one last time. There was no fear in his eyes—only a cold, bitter resignation. He slowly stood up, placing his hands behind his back as the steel cuffs clicked shut around his wrists.
As the marshals led Thomas and Victoria out of the boardroom past the stunned faces of the directors, Victoria shot one final, venomous glare at Sarah.

"You think you've won, little girl?" Victoria spat over her shoulder as the officers guided her toward the elevator. "That child inside you is tied to a sinking ship. You'll never see a dime of this estate."
The heavy doors closed behind them, sealing the silence of the room.
