Chapter 8 - The Price of Treason

The sentencing phase of the trial was a swift, brutal, and entirely justified execution of Daniel Hale’s entire existence. He had sought to strip me of my name, my fortune, and my dignity, and now the law was going to strip him of his freedom.
"For the heinous crimes of aggravated domestic assault on a defenseless, pregnant individual, corporate embezzlement exceeding eight million dollars, wire fraud, and grand larceny," the federal judge declared, her voice ringing out like a mallet of justice as she slammed her wooden gavel down with a sound that echoed like a gunshot through the packed courtroom, "I sentence you, Daniel Hale, to twenty-two years in a maximum-security federal penitentiary, to be served consecutively, without the slightest possibility of early parole."
Daniel instantly collapsed backward into his chair, letting out a choked, hollow sob, his face burying into his shackled hands as two burly federal marshals stepped forward to lock the heavy iron chains around his waist, wrists, and ankles.
Vanessa was sentenced to a strict eight years in a women's correctional facility for her extensive role as an active co-conspirator and for the grand theft of corporate property. As the marshals began to lead them away in different directions, Vanessa completely snapped. She lunged across the defense table, screaming vicious insults at Daniel, clawing at his face, and cursing the very day she had ever met him—completely exposing the ugly, parasitic, transactional nature of the affair they had built upon my suffering.

I stood up calmly from the gallery, turning my back on both of them before they could even be escorted through the heavy iron side doors. I didn't feel an overwhelming rush of joy, nor did I feel a petty desire for revenge. I felt something far more powerful: a profound, beautiful, liberating vacuum. They were no longer characters in my story. They were merely closed data points in a federal criminal ledger.
As we walked out into the crisp afternoon air, my father put his arm around my shoulder, looking down at me with immense pride. "It’s finally over, Clara. The Montgomery legacy is completely secure in your hands."
