Chapter 3 - The Face of the Enemy

Three days later, despite the doctor’s orders for total bed rest, I refused to sit idly in a hospital room while my future was being decided. I sat in a wheelchair in a secure, soundproof deposition room at the federal building downtown, a thick blanket draped over my pregnant belly. My father stood directly behind me, an immovable, protective shadow. Across the heavy glass table sat Daniel. He was no longer the pristine, arrogant executive who had splashed mud across my face. He wore a drab, ill-fitting orange jumpsuit, his hair unwashed and greasy, his face gaunt from seventy-two hours of facing a reality without his luxury lifestyle.
His defense attorney, a frantic, sweating man named Henderson, leaned forward nervously. "Ms. Montgomery, my client is fully prepared to sign over the deed to the suburban estate, waive all claims to the marital assets, and grant you absolute, uncontested sole custody of the unborn child right now—provided you agree to drop the criminal assault and federal fraud charges."
Daniel looked up, his eyes bloodshot and desperate. He tried to force that old, boyish, manipulative smile that used to make me doubt my own sanity during our worst arguments. "Clara, please. Look at me. Think about our baby boy. You really want his father to be behind bars when he takes his first breath? I made a massive mistake. Vanessa... she manipulated me, Clara. She’s the one who pushed for the company shares. She threatened to ruin me if I didn't give her your position. I still love you, Clara. I always have."
The sheer, visceral disgust that washed over me in that moment was completely liberating. For three years, this man had systematically gaslighted me, called me a "fat cow" to undermine my self-esteem, and made me feel like an embarrassing inconvenience in my own skin while I secretly funded his failing business ventures.
"You don't love me, Daniel. You love my father's prestige, and you loved the pathetic illusion of power you felt when you pushed a pregnant woman into the freezing mud," I said, my voice deadpan, quiet, and razor-sharp. "And as for your lawyer's laughable offer... you don't even own the house you tried to kick me out of. The land that estate was built on was purchased by a Montgomery real estate subsidiary twenty years ago. The ground lease explicitly states that the contract is terminated immediately upon any act of moral turpitude or criminal behavior committed on the property. You have zero equity."
Henderson turned slowly to Daniel, his face completely paling. "Daniel... you explicitly told me you owned the land deed clear through your father's estate."
May you like
"He lied to you, Mr. Henderson. Just like he has lied to his board, his wife, and himself for his entire life," I leaned forward, looking directly into my husband’s terrified eyes. "And don't worry about Vanessa being alone. Federal marshals evicted her from my house yesterday afternoon. They caught her trying to load five hundred thousand dollars worth of stolen Montgomery-Hale corporate art into a moving van. She’s currently down the hall in women's processing, and she’s already offered to testify against you to reduce her own sentence."
Daniel’s jaw dropped, his hands shaking so violently that the heavy iron chains attached to his waist belt rattled loudly against the metal table.
