Sarah held baby Sophie in her arms, gently rocking her while Maya showed Dr. Thorne her new theoretical model for predicting solar radiation patterns.
"Mr. Whitmore," Sarah said to me as we stood near the French doors overlooking the garden, "I don't know how to thank you. Two weeks ago, we were facing eviction from our temporary apartment in Ohio. Today... Maya has a future that no one can ever take away from her."
"You don't need to thank me, Mrs. Lin," I smiled, looking across the room at Maya. "Your daughter saved my child on a night when I felt like a complete failure. What I gave her was just justice. What she gave me was perspective."
"What will happen to Oakridge Academy?" Sarah asked.

"Whitmore Global purchased the entire school property out of bankruptcy court yesterday," I announced softly. "We are fully renovating the building, rebuilding the science labs, and reopening it next autumn as the Oakridge Lin Academy for Gifted Youth, with full scholarships for every single student in the district."
Sarah pulled me into a warm, maternal hug, tears falling onto my shoulder.
