Chapter 7 - The True Scholar

An hour later, in the grand briefing room of Whitmore Global headquarters, I stood behind a podium before two hundred international science journalists.

Sophie was sound asleep in her crib in my private office upstairs, cared for by our trusted family nurse.

"Six months ago," I addressed the cameras, "Whitmore Global issued an unsolved mathematical challenge to the world. Today, I am proud to announce that the challenge has been solved with absolute perfection."

I stepped back from the podium. "Please welcome the sole creator of the Lin-Whitmore Optimization Theorem... Miss Maya Lin."

Maya walked up to the podium. She looked nervous for a split second, but as she looked at me, she stood tall, adjusting her microphone with steady hands.

"Mathematics isn't about power or money," Maya told the world, her voice echoing clearly across international broadcasts. "It's about finding order in chaos. It's about solving problems that make people's lives safer, better, and more connected. I want to thank my late grandfather, my mother, and Mr. Daniel Whitmore, who listened to me when everyone else told me to be quiet."

The room burst into thunderous applause.

I stepped forward and presented her with an official glass plaque, along with a check for the full prize amount: a five-million-dollar research grant and a full endowment establishing the Maya Lin Mathematical Institute at Cambridge University.

Behind the crowd of cheering journalists, I saw Dr. Aris Thorne wiping tears from his eyes, holding up a glass of champagne in tribute to the youngest research fellow in our company's history.
