Chapter 8 - Confrontation at Bellevue

Two weeks later, Evelyn Mercer was discharged from St. Catherine's Hospital and returned to the family estate in Bellevue.
The Mercer mansion sat on four acres of pristine waterfront land, surrounded by high wrought-iron gates and manicured gardens. It was a palace built on cold tradition, the very house Claire had walked out of five years ago.
Logan walked into the grand library on the ground floor. Evelyn was sitting in a high-backed armchair near the marble fireplace, a cashmere blanket over her legs, a cup of tea resting on the side table.
"Logan," she said, her voice thin but recovering. "You finally decided to visit your mother."
Logan stood near the center of the room, his arms folded across his chest. "I came to tell you the new arrangement."
Evelyn set her teacup down with a soft click. "What arrangement?"
"I am establishing a co-parenting schedule with Claire," Logan said calmly. "I see the boys three days a week. Next month, when they're comfortable, they will spend weekends with me at the Seattle condo."
Evelyn’s eyes narrowed slightly. "And Claire? Are you giving her money?"
"She doesn't want your money, Mother," Logan said sharply. "She never did. That was your mistake—you thought everyone had a price because you and Father had one."
Evelyn flinched, the color draining from her pale face. "Logan! I did what I did to protect this family! You were married to a girl from a middle-class background with no connections, no standing, and—as I was led to believe by your father's advisors—no ability to secure the Mercer line!"
"You ruined her father's business!" Logan yelled, taking three steps toward her chair. "You paid a doctor to lie about her body! You forced her to raise two children alone in a tiny apartment while I lived in luxury! How do you sleep at night, Mother?"
"I sleep knowing I kept the Mercer name intact!" Evelyn cried out, her voice cracking with old, bitter pride. "And where are those boys now? Are they going to proper prep schools? Are they being raised to lead Mercer Global?"
"They are four years old!" Logan shouted back. "They are playing in rain boots and drawing rockets on napkins! They are happy, healthy, and loved! Things I never was in this godforsaken house!"
Evelyn stared at her son, her chest heaving under her silk robe.
Logan leaned down until his eyes were level with hers.
"If you ever try to contact Claire again, or if you attempt to use your legal influence to interfere with my sons' lives," Logan said, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper, "I will resign as CEO of Mercer Global, liquidate my entire holding, and leave you to run this company with Richard and the board. You will have your legacy, Mother. But you will die in this house entirely alone."

Evelyn closed her eyes, a long, broken gasp escaping her lips.
Logan turned on his heel and walked out of the library, leaving the heavy oak doors open behind him.
