Chapter 7 - The Science Center

Sunday morning arrived with an unexpected break in the Seattle weather. Pale sunlight filtered through the grey clouds, casting a soft glow over the arches of the Pacific Science Center.
Logan arrived at 9:30 AM, thirty minutes early. He wore plain sneakers, blue jeans, and a dark green jacket. He stood near the ticket booth, shifting his weight nervously, holding a paper bag containing three drawn-out schematics of NASA rockets he had spent four hours printing and studying the night before.
At 9:58 AM, he saw them.
Claire was walking across the courtyard, holding two small hands. Leo was wearing his yellow raincoat, stomping on dried leaves, while Sam was walking carefully, looking up at the high white arches above them.
Logan’s heart pounded harder than it ever had during a hostile corporate takeover.
"Hi," Logan said as they reached him.
Claire gave him a small, encouraging nod. "Boys, you remember the tall man from the hospital?"
Leo stopped stomping and looked up at Logan. "Are you the man who knows about rockets?"
Logan dropped to his knees on the concrete, opening the paper bag. "I know a lot about rockets, Leo. In fact, I brought some blueprints of the Saturn V moon rocket."
Sam’s eyes went wide. He let go of Claire’s hand and stepped forward, his small fingers hovering over the paper sheets Logan pulled out.
"Is that the stage three engine?" Sam asked in a small, hushed voice.
Logan looked at the four-year-old in sheer amazement. "You know what a stage three engine is?"
"He reads space books before bed," Claire said softly, standing behind them, her hands in her trench coat pockets. "He memorized the Apollo missions last month."
For the next three hours, the world outside ceased to exist for Logan Mercer.
He didn't check his phone once. He didn't think about Mercer Global, the stock prices, or his mother’s recovery in the hospital. He spent three hours walking through the science exhibits, lifting Leo up so he could press the buttons on the interactive physics displays, and sitting on a small wooden bench with Sam, explaining how liquid oxygen burns in space.
At 1:00 PM, they sat at an outdoor café table eating hot dogs. Leo had mustard on his chin, and Sam was busy drawing a rocket on a paper napkin with a crayon Logan had borrowed from the cashier.
"You have mustard right... here," Logan said, reaching across the table with a napkin to gently wipe Leo's chin.
Leo didn't pull away. He just looked at Logan with wide, curious eyes.
"Are you our daddy?" Leo asked abruptly.
The table went completely still.
Claire stopped mid-sip of her coffee, her eyes locking onto Logan’s face with sudden intensity.
Logan looked at the boy, then at Sam, who had stopped drawing and was watching him closely. He felt a lump form in his throat, but this time, he didn't hide his emotion.
"I am, Leo," Logan said softly, his voice full of a tender honesty he hadn't known he possessed. "I made a big mistake a long time ago, and I was away for a very long time. But I am your daddy, and I am so sorry I missed the first four years."
Leo looked at Sam. Sam looked back at Leo.
Then Leo picked up a French fry and held it out to Logan. "Do you want a fry, Daddy?"
May you like
Logan took the fry, his hand shaking slightly. "Thank you, Leo."
Beside them, Claire looked away toward the fountain, wiping a fast, silent tear from her cheek.
