Chapter 16 - The Liquidation

Three weeks after Julian Vance’s arrest, the legal dominoes continued to fall across two continents.
With Julian held in a federal detention facility in Chicago awaiting extradition to Switzerland, the Aethelgard Group collapsed into immediate receivership. The high-yield lenders who had backed his ill-fated corporate raid scrambled to liquidate assets to cover their massive losses on the London stock exchange.
Inside the glass-walled legal department at Aegis Enterprises, Sarah presided over a team of twenty corporate attorneys, systematically dismantling what remained of Julian’s financial network.
"We’ve secured full title to the European port logistics concessions," Sarah reported during a morning briefing, sliding a tablet across the desk to Emma. "Julian’s creditors agreed to transfer forty percent of Aethelgard’s underlying infrastructure holdings to Aegis in exchange for us dropping our tortious interference lawsuits in London."
Emma looked over the numbers. Aegis Enterprises had not only defended its original footprint; it had expanded its maritime logistics capability directly into Rotterdam and Hamburg.
"And the domestic holdings?" Emma asked.
"The old Sterling Global shell companies have been entirely liquidated," Sarah said, a satisfied smile appearing on her face. "Every lingering tax lien, every frozen account, every obscure trust agreement created by Victor’s father has been legally terminated. Aegis is now a clean, unified entity with zero heritage liabilities."
"Good," Emma said, setting the tablet down. "Have the legal teams complete the final transfer papers for the Gold Coast land."
"The demolition of the old mansion was completed yesterday," Marcus added, stepping into the office with a printed aerial photograph. "The site is completely clear. Construction teams for the new community park are ready to break ground on Monday."
Emma looked at the photograph. Where the dark, imposing stone mansion had once stood, holding decades of family secrets and corporate cruelty, there was now only open space and earth under the wide Chicago sky.
"Have you selected a name for the park?" Sarah asked softly.
Emma looked out her office window toward Lake Michigan. "The Elena Vance Memorial Park. In honor of Victor’s grandmother—the only person in that family who ever built anything meant to last."

Her phone chimed with a private notification. It was a secure message from Chief Federal Prosecutor David Vance (no relation to Julian), confirming that Julian Vance had signed a full plea agreement in Liechtenstein and would spend the next fifteen years in a maximum-security European facility.
The last ghost of the Sterling family legacy had been laid to rest.
