Chapter 13 - Shadows of the Past

By early evening, the blockade at the Port of Chicago was cleared. The heavy diesel engines roared back to life, and the flow of freight resumed across the Midwest.
Yet inside the quiet executive suite of Aegis Enterprises, there was no celebration.
Emma sat at her desk, staring at a digitized dossier Marcus had retrieved from an abandoned vault in Zurich. The file contained personal letters, private banking records, and offshore ledger entries dating back twenty years.
Sarah walked in, carrying two cups of black coffee. She set one down on the desk and took a seat opposite Emma.
"The port is operating at maximum capacity," Sarah said softly. "The Singapore deal stabilized our cash flow, and the frozen accounts have been completely unlocked by order of the federal court."
"We won the battle at the gate," Emma murmured, her eyes remaining on the illuminated screen. "But look at this, Sarah."
She turned the monitor toward her chief counsel.
The screen displayed a series of wire transfers executed three weeks before Emma’s late husband, Victor Sterling, died in his fatal car crash. The transfers were not payments to creditors or offshore investments. They were monthly stipends sent to a private medical facility located in a remote valley near Lucerne, Switzerland.
"Why was Victor sending two hundred thousand dollars a month to an unlisted psychiatric clinic?" Sarah asked, reading the ledger entries with a brow furrowed in confusion.
"Because he wasn't paying for his own care," Emma said, her voice dropping to a low, quiet whisper. "Look at the patient intake form."
Sarah leaned closer, her breath catching in her throat as she read the redacted name at the top of the intake document.
Patient Identifier: Vance, E.
"Eleanor Sterling," Sarah gasped. "Victor’s mother. The woman who tried to evict you... the woman who dropped that fraudulent lease agreement on your dining room table three years ago."
"Eleanor didn't disappear into private retirement in Florida after she lost the corporate war," Emma said, her fingers tracing the screen. "Victor secretly committed her to an international asylum under a false name three months before he died. He used her voting proxy to secure the loans from Julian Vance."
The pieces of the puzzle began to lock into place with terrifying precision.
The hostility, the legal attacks, the endless harassment Emma had faced from her mother-in-law had not merely been the actions of a bitter, greedy matriarch. Eleanor had been fighting to cover up the fact that her own son was systematically stripping her authority and locking her away to fund his gambling debts and corporate fraud.
"If Eleanor was locked away in Switzerland," Sarah said, "then who was the woman who showed up at your townhouse three years ago with that lease agreement?"
Emma stood up slowly, her mind working through the grim reality of the Sterling family's rot. "It was an actor hired by Victor to force me into giving up my personal inheritance. Victor set the whole thing up. He wanted me broke, isolated, and desperate so I wouldn't investigate his private accounts."
The phone on Emma’s desk began to hum softly.
She picked it up and pressed the speaker button.
"Did you find her, Emma?" Julian Vance’s voice purred through the line, colder and more intimate than before. "Did you find my dear sister Eleanor?"
"She isn't in Switzerland anymore, is she, Julian?" Emma asked, her voice steady and unreadable.
"No," Julian replied, a soft chuckle echoing over the speaker. "I extracted her from that high-priced prison three days ago. Poor Eleanor... her mind isn't what it used to be, but her signature on the family trust documents remains perfectly legible."
"What do you want, Julian?"
"I want what my father built before Eleanor and her useless son ruined it," Julian said sharply, his polite demeanor slipping for a brief second to reveal the raw, venomous rage beneath. "I want full ownership of the Sterling Heritage Trust, including every asset Aegis absorbed during the bankruptcy restructuring."
"That trust was dissolved," Emma stated cold-bloodedly.
"It was never legally dissolved, because Eleanor’s signature on the dissolution paper was forged by Victor," Julian countered smoothly. "I have Eleanor here with me now, Emma. And tomorrow morning, she is going to execute a full revocation of all corporate transfers made to Aegis Enterprises over the last three years."
Emma remained motionless, her eyes fixed on the rain-streaked window. "You are using an elderly, incapacitated woman to execute a corporate coup."
"I am using whatever weapon is available to me," Julian replied. "Just as you used your sharp mind to steal an empire that never belonged to you. Come to the Gold Coast estate tomorrow at noon, Emma. Come alone, or Eleanor’s revocations will be filed with every probate court in the country before sunset."
The line went quiet.

Sarah stood up, her face filled with anxiety. "You can't go there, Emma. It’s a trap. Julian Vance is a desperate criminal who has spent thirty years in the shadows. He has nothing left to lose."
"He has one thing left to lose," Emma said, walking toward her coat rack. "He has his conviction that he is the smartest man in the room."
