Chapter 4 - The Fall of the Pretender

The sun rose over the glass towers of downtown Charlotte, casting a sharp, golden light across the city.

Inside a cramped, dingy room at the Highway Motel, Wade stood in front of a cracked bathroom mirror, desperately trying to iron his suit jacket with a cheap steam iron.

across the room, Lorraine was weeping loudly on one of the twin beds. "They took my luggage, Wade! They took my pearl necklace that you bought me!"

"I bought it with the corporate account, Mother!" Wade snapped, his hair disheveled, sweat glistening on his forehead. "They froze everything! But it doesn't matter. Today changes everything. Once I sign the contract with Arthur Sterling at Apex Holdings, I’ll get a five-million-dollar advance payment. I’ll pay off the lawyers, buy back the house, and ruin Celeste!"

Brynn sat in the corner, holding a cold cup of cheap motel coffee. She was no longer smiling. The glamour of being the high-powered mistress had evaporated the moment she was forced to sleep in a room that smelled of stale smoke and bleach.

"Are you sure Sterling will sign?" Brynn asked, her voice laced with sudden skepticism. "If your accounts are frozen, how are you going to show liquidity?"

"Sterling trusts me!" Wade shouted, shoving his wallet into his pocket. "He knows I’m the mastermind behind the Oakridge luxury developments! He doesn't give a damn about legal technicalities between me and my ex-wife. Now shut up and help me get a taxi. We have thirty minutes."

By 8:50 AM, Wade stepped into the shimmering glass lobby of the Sterling Tower. He adjusted his collar, threw his shoulders back, and forced his trademark, charming smile onto his face. Brynn followed a few paces behind, carrying a binder of stolen, uncredited architectural designs that Celeste had drafted months ago.

They rode the private elevator to the 40th floor, the executive suite of Apex Holdings.

When the doors opened, they were escorted into a massive, mahogany-paneled boardroom overlooking the skyline. Sitting at the head of the long table was Arthur Sterling—a tall, imposing man in his late sixties with silver hair and eyes as sharp as razors.

"Ah, Mr. Sterling!" Wade said warmly, striding forward with his hand extended. "It’s an absolute honor. I brought the finalized proposals for the Grandview Estate project."

Arthur Sterling didn't stand up. He didn't take Wade’s hand. He simply pointed to the leather chair opposite him.

"Sit down, Wade," Arthur said flatly.

Wade took a seat, feeling a cold prickle of anxiety at the back of his neck. "Mr. Sterling, I know there might be some foolish rumors floating around today regarding my personal life... minor domestic disputes, you understand. But I assure you, Marlowe Development is operating at maximum capacity."

"Is that so?" Arthur asked, leaning back and resting his hands on the table. "Because five minutes ago, I received a notice from the State Licensing Board stating that Marlowe Development’s general contractor license has been suspended indefinitely."

Wade froze. "What? That’s... that’s an administrative error!"

"And," Arthur continued, picking up a paper, "I received a formal letter from Vanguard Holdings informing me that any attempt by your company to use the blueprints for the Grandview Estate project will result in a fifty-million-dollar copyright infringement lawsuit. They claim the blueprints belong exclusively to Montgomery Architectural Design."

"Celeste..." Wade hissed under his breath, his hands tightening into fists. "She’s lying to you, Arthur! She’s my bitter, uneducated ex-wife! She’s trying to sabotage me because I dumped her! She doesn't know anything about architecture!"

Arthur Sterling let out a dry, cold laugh. He tapped a button on the intercom on his desk.

"Bring her in," Arthur said.

The heavy side doors of the boardroom opened.

Wade turned around, expecting to see a legal representative. Instead, his breath caught in his throat.

Stepping into the room was Celeste.

She wasn't wearing the simple, worn oversized sweaters she wore at home. She wore an immaculate, tailored ivory suit that framed her posture with regal authority. Her dark hair was styled in sleek, polished waves, and around her neck hung a simple, multi-carat diamond pendant—the crest of the Montgomery family.

Walking right beside her was Maya Vance, flanked by two senior partners from the city’s top corporate law firm.

"Celeste?" Wade gasped, standing up so fast his chair scraped loudly against the floor. "What... what are you doing here?! How dare you come here?!"

Celeste didn't look flustered. She walked to the head of the table, and Arthur Sterling immediately stood up, extending his hand to her with deep, genuine respect.

"Welcome, Ms. Montgomery," Arthur said warmly. "It is an honor to finally meet the brilliant mind behind the Oakridge blueprints. I hope you are recovering well from your procedure?"

"I am doing much better, thank you, Arthur," Celeste said softly, taking a seat at the head of the table—the seat reserved for the ultimate authority in the room.

Wade stared at them, his eyes wide with utter shock and rising panic. "Ms. Montgomery? Arthur, what the hell are you talking about?! Her name is Celeste Marlowe! She’s nobody!"

"Silence!" Arthur Sterling thundered, his voice echoing through the room. "You ignorant fool. Do you have any idea who you are standing in front of?"

Arthur pointed a finger at Celeste. "This woman is Celeste Montgomery, sole heiress to Montgomery Enterprises and the founder of Vanguard Holdings. She single-handedly funded every single project your pitiful little firm ever attempted! You were never the genius, Wade. You were merely the front man she chose to represent her designs because she preferred to live a quiet life!"

Wade turned to Celeste, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. "No... no, that’s impossible. You... you were just... you worked from home..."

"I worked from home because I was building an empire while carrying your child," Celeste said, her voice dropping into a razor-sharp, quiet intensity. "Every line drawn on those blueprints was mine. Every loan you secured was guaranteed by my family’s trust. I gave you my designs, my backing, and my heart. And you threw it away for a mistress and a cheap sense of power."

Brynn, standing behind Wade, slowly dropped the binder of stolen designs onto the floor. She took a step back toward the door, her face pale as snow.

"Arthur," Celeste said calmly, turning her gaze away from Wade as if he were nothing more than dust on the table. "Vanguard Holdings will be taking over the Grandview Estate project directly. We will provide full funding and superior execution. But as for Marlowe Development..."

May you like

Celeste looked straight into Wade’s trembling eyes.

"We are liquidating it today."
