Chapter 2 - The Facade Crumbles

Inside the mansion, Wade stood in front of the floor-to-ceiling mirror in his master suite, tightening his silk tie. Brynn was sitting on the edge of the bed, swirling a glass of expensive cabernet.
"She took it surprisingly well," Brynn remarked, a smirk playing on her lips. "I thought she would scream, maybe try to ruin your clothes."
"Celeste has always been weak," Wade said, admiring his reflection. "She has no spine. Her father left her a small trust fund, but she spent most of it on that art degree she never used. She knows she can't fight me. I built this life. I built Marlowe Development from the ground up."
"And tomorrow night’s dinner with Arthur Sterling is going to solidify everything," Brynn said, standing up and wrapping her arms around his waist. "With Sterling’s twenty-million-dollar investment, Marlowe Development becomes the premier luxury builder in the Carolinas. You won't ever have to worry about her or that crying baby again."
The heavy oak front doors downstairs slammed open with a thud that echoed through the two-story foyer.
"Wade!" Lorraine’s shrill voice cut through the house. "Wade, come down here this instant! What is the meaning of this?!"
Wade frowned, gently pushing Brynn aside. "What is my mother shouting about now?"
They walked out onto the second-floor balcony and looked down. Standing in the middle of the marble foyer were four men in crisp, black security uniforms, led by a tall man in a dark grey suit holding a stack of legal documents.
"Who the hell are you?" Wade barked, descending the stairs with calculated authority. "This is private property. Get out before I call the police!"
The man in the grey suit stepped forward calmly. "Mr. Wade Marlowe?"
"Yes, I am the owner of this estate and the CEO of Marlowe Development. State your business before I have you arrested for trespassing."
The man didn't flinch. He handed a heavy manila folder directly to Wade. "My name is Richard Sterling, chief legal council for Vanguard Property Management. I am here to enforce an immediate order of vacatur for Estate 104, Oakridge Manor."
Wade laughed scoffingly. "Vanguard? I pay monthly lease management fees to Vanguard as a formality for asset protection. I own the underlying holding company!"
"You do not, Mr. Marlowe," Richard Sterling replied, his voice entirely devoid of emotion. "Vanguard Holdings is a private corporation owned 100% by the Montgomery Family Trust. You are merely a conditional tenant under a revocable lease agreement tied to your marriage contract with the primary trustee—Celeste Montgomery Marlowe."
Wade’s face froze. The color drained from his cheeks in a sudden, violent rush. "What did you just say?"
"Furthermore," Richard continued, pulling a second document from his briefcase, "Vanguard Holdings has issued an immediate notice of default regarding Marlowe Development. The land, the equipment, the intellectual property rights, and the central credit lines for your business were all backed by Vanguard's assets. As of three o'clock this afternoon, all corporate accounts for Marlowe Development have been frozen pending a full forensic audit."
"This is ridiculous!" Brynn yelled, stepping down the stairs beside Wade. "You can't just freeze corporate accounts! We have a multi-million dollar pitch with Apex Holdings tomorrow!"
Richard turned his gaze to Brynn, unblinking. "Miss Hollowell, I suggest you return the silk robe you are currently wearing to the master suite. It was purchased using a private credit card belonging to the Montgomery Trust. Retaining it constitutes theft of trust property."
Brynn gasped, her face flushing bright red.
"Wade..." Lorraine whimpered, clutching her son’s arm, her previous arrogance melting into blind panic. "What is he talking about? Tell them to leave! Tell them you own this place!"
Wade’s hands shook as he leafed through the thick stack of papers. Page after page bore his signature, but right above them, in dark, elegant ink, was the overarching signature of the master grantor: Celeste Montgomery.
Every line of credit he had used to start his business, every permit approved for his construction sites, the master deed to the mansion, even the registration for the Aston Martin parked in his garage—they weren't his. They had never been his. Celeste had allowed him to put his company name on the letterhead, but the foundation, the steel, and the land belonged entirely to her.
"She... she was just a helpless wife," Wade muttered, his voice cracking. "She didn't know anything about business. She just drew pictures in her notebook..."
"Those 'pictures', Mr. Marlowe," Richard Sterling said coldly, "were the architectural blueprints for every major commercial building Marlowe Development has completed in the last three years. Mrs. Marlowe is the lead architect and principal owner of Montgomery Architectural Design."
Richard stepped closer, leaning in slightly. "You have sixty minutes to pack your personal effects. Only items acquired prior to your marriage or purchased strictly with your personal, unassisted funds may be removed. The Aston Martin keys must be left on the kitchen counter. If you are still on the property at five o'clock, local sheriff deputies will remove you for criminal trespass."

"You can't do this to me!" Wade screamed, dropping the papers as they scattered across the marble floor. "I’m the CEO! I built this!"
"You built nothing, Mr. Marlowe," Richard said smoothly. "You were simply allowed to live in the house that Celeste built. And now, she wants her keys back."
