Chapter 8 - The Final Stand

Vance’s security detail swept the rest of the mansion, neutralizing the remaining two mercenaries in the lower gardens before police sirens began wailing in the distance.

The heavy steel door of the library panic room hissed open.

Mrs. Gable stepped out first, holding a heavy iron frying pan, her face pale but determined. Behind her, the six children emerged, clutching one another’s hands.

Tommy ran straight past the guards and threw his small arms around Dante’s leg. "Daddy! We heard loud noises!"

Dante dropped to both knees, ignoring the cut on his cheek and the blood on his shirt, and pulled Tommy tightly into his chest. His eyes closed, his shoulders shaking as he held his son with a fierceness that proved no corporate title or billion-dollar empire could ever match his devotion as a father.

Marcus, Jonah, Isabelle, Sophie, and Lily gathered around me, wrapping their arms around my waist.

"Is it over, Clara?" Marcus asked quietly, looking at the broken glass and police lights flashing outside the high arched windows. "Is he gone for good?"

"He's gone, Marcus," I said, holding the young boy’s shoulders firmly. "Your home is safe now. No one is ever going to force you into the shadows again."

Ten minutes later, the Chicago Police Department and federal authorities swept the property, taking the hired mercenaries into custody. The lead FBI agent assured Dante that Richard Calvetti’s offshore accounts were completely frozen and that Richard’s remaining co-conspirators were being arrested across three states.

As the sun began to rise over the misty woods of Lake Forest, casting a warm pink and gold glow across the mansion's lawn, Dante walked over to where I was sitting on the front porch steps, wrapped in a warm wool blanket.

He sat beside me, two fresh cups of coffee in his hands. He handed me one and looked out at the peaceful forest.

"I called my legal team an hour ago," Dante said softly.

I took a sip of the hot coffee. "And?"

"I’m establishing the Foster-Calvetti Foundation," he revealed, looking at me sideways. "A two-hundred-million-dollar trust dedicated to protecting, housing, and educating orphaned children across the state. The South Side industrial land is being converted into a modern sanctuary, complete with a school, medical clinic, and housing units."

I looked at him, feeling a wave of emotion wash over me that choked back my words. "Dante... Ruth would have cried if she heard that."

"I’m not finished," Dante continued, his gray eyes shining with an intense, steady light. "The foundation needs a Chief Executive Officer. Someone who knows what those children need. Someone who isn't afraid to slap a billionaire with a flashlight to keep them safe."

I laughed, a warm, genuine sound that felt lighter than air. "Are you offering me a job, Mr. Calvetti?"

"I’m offering you a life, Clara," Dante said, reaching out to take my hand in his. His thumb brushed softly over my knuckles. "With me. With Tommy. With all of them."
