Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary at Lake Forest

By midnight, the six children and I were standing in the grand foyer of Dante Calvetti’s private estate in Lake Forest. It was a sprawling, gated mansion surrounded by fifty acres of private forest, miles away from the smoke and noise of the city.

The children stood on the polished marble floor, their worn sneakers leaving faint smudges. They looked up at the towering ceilings, the crystal chandeliers, and the grand double staircase in absolute silence.

A middle-aged woman in a crisp uniform—Dante’s housekeeper, Mrs. Gable—hurried down the stairs with a warm, welcoming smile. There was no judgment in her eyes, only deep compassion.

"Mr. Calvetti," she said softly. "The east wing guest suites are prepared. Fresh linens, warm baths, and the kitchen is stocked."

"Thank you, Mary," Dante said. He turned to the kids. "Go with Mrs. Gable. Eat whatever you want. Sleep in real beds. You're safe here."

Lily, the youngest girl, looked up at me nervously, tugging on my jacket sleeve. "Are you staying, Clara?"

"I’m not going anywhere, Lily," I promised, kneeling down to kiss her forehead. "I’ll be right down the hall."

Once the children were ushered upstairs, Dante led me into his private study. A massive fire crackled in the stone fireplace, casting long, dancing shadows across shelves lined with leather-bound books and ancient maps of Chicago.

He poured two glasses of scotch and handed one to me. I took it, the amber warmth burning down my throat and easing the tension that had gripped my shoulders for six long months.

"Tommy is my son," Dante said flatly, standing near the fire. "Five years ago, before I took over as CEO, I spent three months living incognito at Ruth’s rural shelter while recovering from a car accident. I met a woman there... Elena. She was a volunteer."

He stared into the flames, his expression pained. "Elena died giving birth to Tommy. Ruth promised me she would keep him safe until I cleared the corporate legal battles that my uncle was waging against me. But then my uncle staged his coup. He convinced me Elena had no surviving child and that Ruth had disappeared."

"Richard didn't just want the land, did he?" I asked, setting my glass down. "He wanted to break you. He wanted to make sure you had no family left to claim a share of the Calvetti legacy."

"Precisely," Dante said, his voice dropping an octave, becoming chillingly cold. "Tomorrow at 9:00 AM is the annual Calvetti Board of Directors meeting. My uncle plans to announce the demolition of the South Side industrial district to build a private casino resort."

He looked at me, his eyes locking onto mine with an unreadable intensity.

"You’re going to be right beside me at that table, Clara. Not as my assistant. As the executor of the Foster Foundation Trust."
