Chapter 8 - The Trial of Evan Miller

The criminal trial lasted six days.
It was covered extensively by state and national news outlets as a landmark case in digital forensic evidence. Evan’s defense team attempted to present a narrative that Evan suffered from a sudden psychotic break caused by work stress, but Julianna Vance’s devastating testimony shattered their defense entirely.
Julianna took the stand as a prosecution witness, detailing how Evan had planned the entire operation over eight months, detailing his precise instructions on how to drug my tea, how to stage the collision, and how to use the legal system via a fraudulent restraining order to keep me isolated in the hospital until I was either declared incompetent or died from complications.
On the fifth day, I took the witness stand.
Evan sat at the defense table, sitting slumped between his attorneys. He looked gaunt, gray, and completely broken. He avoided my gaze entirely.
When the prosecutor asked me to describe the night of the crash, I spoke with absolute clarity. I did not shed a single tear. I did not falter. I detailed how I woke up paralyzed in the passenger seat, unable to move my arms, watching him put the car into gear and step out into the night before the crash occurred.
“Mrs. Miller,” the lead defense attorney asked on cross-examination, trying one final, desperate play. “Isn't it true that you had been taking prescription nerve medication that could cause confusion?”
“It is true that I was prescribed a low-dose medication,” I replied, looking directly at the jury panel. “It is also true that my husband secretly spiked that medication with lethal doses of over-the-counter sedatives, as proven by the forensic toxicology report, the garage surveillance tapes, and his co-conspirator’s sworn testimony.”
The defense attorney closed his notebook, sat down, and said nothing further.
The jury deliberated for less than two hours.
The verdict was unanimous: Guilty on all counts.
At the sentencing hearing two weeks later, the judge looked down at Evan with unyielding sternness.
“Mr. Miller, you used your position of trust as a husband to systematically poison, manipulate, and attempt to murder your wife for financial gain. You attempted to pervert the judicial system by using a protective order as a weapon of abuse. This court finds no mitigating circumstances whatsoever.”
The judge slammed his gavel.

“You are sentenced to forty-five years in the state penitentiary without the possibility of parole.”
Evan was led away in chains, his head hanging low, fading forever into the cold obscurity of a federal prison cell.
