Chapter 7 - The Grand Jury

Three weeks later, I stood before a twenty-four-person Grand Jury in the federal courthouse downtown.

The courtroom was quiet, save for the scratching of the court reporter’s machine. I wore a tailored navy suit, standing tall at the witness podium while the Assistant United States Attorney guided me through my testimony.

For three hours, I laid out every detail: the subtle gaslighting over the past two years, the mysterious illnesses after drinking his prepared teas, the staged crash, the fraudulent restraining order, and the stolen trust funds.

Beside the prosecutor sat the primary physical evidence: the telematics logs, the infrared photographs, the garage security tape, the poisoned teapot, and the recovered financial ledgers stained with gasoline.

When I finished my testimony, the grand jury foreperson—an older woman sitting in the front row—looked at me with deep empathy and gave a quiet, respectful nod.

After forty-five minutes of deliberation, the Grand Jury returned a true bill of indictment.

Evan Miller was officially charged with:

Count 1: Attempted First-Degree Premeditated Murder

Count 2: Federal Wire and Insurance Fraud

Count 3: Aggravated Perjury and Framing a Judicial Officer

Count 4: Attempted Arson of a Residential Structure

Count 5: Tampering with Electronic Monitoring Devices

There would be no second bail. The federal judge ordered Evan held in solitary confinement at a high-security detention facility until trial.

As I walked out of the courtroom, Victoria met me in the marble lobby holding a brown envelope.

“The probate court just issued their final ruling,” Victoria said, a triumph in her smile. “Evan’s legal authority over your mother’s trust has been completely revoked and declared null and void from inception. All stolen funds—plus full interest and punitive damages from his frozen personal accounts—have been deposited back into your private bank account.”

I held the envelope against my chest. The weight of the world, which had pressed down on my shoulders for so long, finally lifted completely.
