Chapter 6 - The Trap is Sprung

Inside the top-floor executive suite of Vance Global Tower, the atmosphere was quiet, calm, and incredibly focused.
I sat at the head of a massive horseshoe-shaped conference table, watching sixteen high-definition screens displaying live network traffic from our global server arrays.
Sitting beside me was not just Arthur Vance, but also Alex Mercer—the Chief Information Security Officer of Vance Global and a former director of the NSA’s Cyber Warfare Division.
"He bit the hook, Miss Vance," Alex reported, tapping a command onto his tablet. A red flashing node appeared on the central monitor, tracing an encrypted connection originating from a server node in Zurich, Switzerland.
I raised an eyebrow, taking a calm sip of my sparkling water. "Garrett?"
"Garrett and Richard Sterling," Alex confirmed with a sharp grin. "Garrett used the partial access string he stole two years ago to breach our decoy staging server forty minutes ago. He thinks he’s inside our core logistics network. He’s currently attempting to upload a secondary ransomware package designed to freeze our West Coast shipping operations."
"Where is he physically executing the breach from?" I asked.
Arthur Vance opened a dossier on his tablet. "A private penthouse suit at the Fairmont Hotel in downtown San Francisco. Richard Sterling rented it three hours ago under a shell company name. They have four high-end servers running continuous data streams."
I leaned back in my leather chair, looking at the glowing red node on the screen.
When I stripped Garrett of his company two months ago, I knew a man of his narcissistic nature wouldn't simply accept defeat. He was too arrogant, too convinced of his own intellectual superiority. I had deliberately left a single, controlled vulnerability in our legacy staging server—a digital honey-pot—waiting for him to try to strike back.
"Have they initiated the stock shorting protocol?" I asked.
"Yes," Alex answered. "Sterling’s offshore fund just placed a three-hundred-million-dollar short position against Vance Global stock, betting that our shares will collapse the moment Garrett’s 'virus' hits the public network."
"Excellent," I said, a cold, decisive smile spreading across my face. "Let them complete the upload. The second the data transfer reaches ninety-nine percent, trigger the mirror-trace protocol and lock the doors of that penthouse."
"And the market position?" Arthur asked.
"Use our liquid reserves to buy up every short contract Richard Sterling just placed," I commanded. "When Garrett’s breach fails and our security report goes public, Vance Global stock will surge ten percent. We will bankrupt Richard Sterling’s entire fund in a single trading session."
"Understood, Miss Vance," Arthur bowed slightly, pulling out his phone to execute the trades.
I stood up, walking toward the floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the San Francisco bay. The rain was washing over the glass, reflecting the golden lights of the city below.
"Marcus," I called out to my security chief standing by the door.
May you like
"Yes, Miss Vance?"
"Prepare the Maybach," I said, buttoning my blazer. "I want to be at the Fairmont Hotel when the FBI sweeps that penthouse."
