Chapter 5 - The Shadow Syndicate

Two months passed.

The dust from the legal proceedings had begun to settle, but a new, darker storm was brewing in the underground corners of San Francisco's elite financial circles.

Garrett Lawson was no longer just a failed CEO; he was a desperate, ruined man fueled by an unhealthy obsession with revenge.

Stripped of his wealth, his prestige, and his company, he had moved into a cramped two-room apartment in a rundown district of Oakland, financed entirely by small loans from Victoria’s distant relatives. But Garrett wasn't spending his remaining energy looking for a job. He was spending every waking hour seeking out people who hated the Vance family as much as he did.

At 11:00 PM on a rainy Tuesday night, Garrett sat in a dimly lit, high-end private lounge in downtown San Francisco.

Sitting across from him in a red velvet booth was Richard Sterling—the elder brother of his former attorney, Donald Sterling, and a disgraced venture capitalist who had lost fifty million dollars in a hostile takeover attempt against Vance Global five years prior.

"You're a mess, Lawson," Richard Sterling sneered, taking a slow sip of his aged whiskey. "You look like a street panhandler."

"I don't care how I look, Richard," Garrett hissed, leaning across the table, his knuckles white. "I know the core architecture of Vance Global's secure logistics network. Evelyn gave me administrative access to her personal server two years ago when we were designing the Lawson Dynamics API."

Richard Sterling’s eyes narrowed with sudden, predatory interest. "You still have the encryption keys?"

"I have the master seed phrase," Garrett lied smoothly, though he actually possessed a partial access string he had copied onto an encrypted flash drive before his corporate clearance was revoked. "With the right cyber-security team, we can breach Vance Global's trade logistics portal during their quarterly stock rebalancing next week. We can short their public stock, leak their proprietary shipping algorithms, and cause a two-billion-dollar market crash in six hours."

Richard leaned back, studying Garrett's desperate face.

"And what do you want out of this, Garrett?" Richard asked. "Money?"

"I want her destroyed," Garrett snarled, his eyes burning with a dark, psychotic fever. "I want her on her knees, begging me for help. I want her to lose that mansion, her reputation, and that stupid, worthless mother of hers."

Richard Sterling smiled—a slow, poisonous curve of his lips. He pulled a black satellite phone from his coat pocket and slid it across the table.

"There is a firm in Zurich," Richard whispered. "They specialize in corporate warfare and dark-web market manipulation. Call them. Tell them Richard sent you. They will give you the heavy artillery you need."

Garrett picked up the phone, feeling a cold, dark thrill surge through his veins.

"Evelyn thinks she won," Garrett muttered to himself as he walked out into the pouring rain. "She has no idea what’s coming."
