Chapter 5 - The Financial Retaliation

True to his word, my father tried to ruin me financially within forty-eight hours of his arrest and subsequent release on high bail.
I received a formal notice terminating my employment at his commercial real estate company, where I had worked as a Senior Property Manager for six years. My company credit cards were canceled, my health insurance was terminated, and my bank account—which was a joint account my father had set up for me when I was in college—was emptied of my $45,000 savings.
He had transferred every penny out of the account, claiming the funds belonged to his corporate entity.
When I checked my mail at my apartment, I found an eviction notice posted to my door. The apartment building was owned by one of my father's subsidiary companies. I had forty-eight hours to vacate the premises.
I stood in my quiet living room, looking at Emma's toys scattered across the rug, feeling a sudden surge of terrifying isolation. I had no job, no savings, no health insurance for Emma's rising medical bills, and no home.
My phone rang. It was an unknown number.
I answered hesitantly. "Hello?"
"Is this Rachel Mercer?" a smooth, professional male voice asked.
"Yes. Who is this?"
"My name is Marcus Vance. I am a senior partner at Vance & Associates Estate and Trust Law. I am not related to Richard Vance, your family's criminal defense lawyer."
"What do you want?" I asked, my defenses instantly up.
"I am calling on behalf of your late grandmother, Eleanor Mercer," Marcus explained softly. "Before she passed away five years ago, she established a private irrevocable trust in your name, with a contingent educational fund for your children. Your father was the executor, but because he has been formally indicted on felony charges, the court has stripped him of his executorship."
My heart stopped in my chest. "A trust?"
"Yes," Marcus confirmed. "Your grandmother foresaw your father's manipulative nature. The trust contains $1.2 million in liquid assets, along with full ownership of a three-bedroom coastal cottage in Cape May, New Jersey. The court has released the funds to your sole control effective immediately."
Tears spilled over my eyes as I sank onto the sofa. My grandmother—the only person in my family who had ever shown me true, unselfish love—had protected me from beyond the grave.
"Mr. Vance," I sobbed into the phone. "Can you transfer funds to pay for Emma's hospital bills right now?"
"It’s already done, Ms. Mercer," Marcus said warmly. "And I have already secured a moving team to pack your apartment and transport your belongings to the Cape May cottage whenever you are ready. Your family cannot touch a single dollar of this money, nor can they evict you from your grandmother's property."

I looked at the framed picture of my grandmother sitting on my mantelpiece.
"Thank you, Grandma," I whispered.
