Chapter 4 - The Arrest and the Escalation

he local news carried the live footage at 5:00 p.m.
I watched as police cruisers pulled into my parents' driveway. Vanessa was led out in handcuffs, her head bowed, trying to hide her face from the news cameras. My mother was shouting at the arresting officers, waving her hands wildly, while my father stood on the porch, pale and defeat-ridden, speaking frantically on his cell phone.
For a brief moment, I felt a wave of relief. Justice was moving forward.
But my relief was short-lived.
At 7:00 p.m., while Emma was sleeping under the care of a night nurse, I stepped down to the hospital cafeteria to grab a cup of tea. As I walked down the quiet corridor near the ground floor elevators, a figure stepped out from behind a concrete pillar, blocking my path.
It was my father.
He looked aged, his hair disheveled, his eyes bloodshot with rage. He had used his business connections to slip past hospital security.
"Rachel," he hissed, stepping closer. "Look what you've done. Vanessa is sitting in a county jail cell because of your mouth!"
I took three steps back, reaching into my pocket to press the emergency security alert button on my phone. "Get away from me, Dad. You're violating a restraining order."
"Restraining order?" my father spat, his voice dropping into a menacing whisper. "I raised you! I paid for your college! I bought your car! And you ruin our family over a stupid kitchen incident?!"
"She threw a scalding iron skillet into my daughter's face!" I yelled, my voice ringing out in the hallway. "She left her unconscious on the floor! And you covered it up!"
"She's four years old, Rachel! She'll heal! Kids get hurt!" he shouted, taking another aggressive step toward me. "If you don't drop these charges by tomorrow morning, I will make sure you lose everything. I will fire you from the family firm, I will evict you from your apartment, and I will hire every lawyer in the state to take Emma away from you for being an unfit mother!"
"You touch my daughter again, and I will kill you myself," I said, every drop of fear leaving my body, replaced by pure, unadulterated motherly instinct.
Before my father could speak, three heavy security guards tackled him to the floor.
"Get off me! I'm her father!" he screamed as the guards pinned his arms behind his back and snapped plastic restraints around his wrists.
Detective Miller, who had been reviewing case files in the hospital office, rushed down the hall.
"Arthur Mercer," Miller said, looking down at my father with absolute contempt. "You are under arrest for felony witness intimidation, breach of a protection order, and trespass."

As they dragged my father away, he glared at me, his face twisted in venomous hatred. "You are no daughter of mine!"
"Good," I replied coldly. "Because you were never a father."
