Chapter 2 - The Snake in the Boardroom

The fifty-second floor of the Bennett Enterprises skyscraper commanded a sweeping, majestic view of the Manhattan skyline. But inside the soundproof boardroom, the atmosphere was suffocating.

Richard Sterling—a sharp, fifty-five-year-old corporate shark with silver hair, wearing an immaculate three-piece charcoal suit—sat at the head of the long glass table. Surrounding him were twelve senior board members, representing sixty percent of the company's voting shares.

"Alexander has lost his mind," Sterling declared, slamming a stack of newspapers onto the table. The front pages were dominated by photos of Alexander carrying a muddy homeless child out of Washington Square Park under headlines reading: “Billionaire’s Secret Street Child?” and “Bennett Enterprises Stock Plummets Amid CEO Scandal!”

"He canceled the Hong Kong merger meeting," Sterling continued, his voice dripping with calculated concern. "He spent ten million dollars of company security capital on a personal wild goose chase in Queens. He is mentally unstable, grieving a dead ghost, and risking our entire shareholder value."

"Richard," an elderly board member named Mrs. Danforth spoke up, frowning. "Alexander claims the child is his long-lost daughter. If there was foul play regarding Arthur Bennett's estate—"

"Arthur Bennett was a visionary!" Sterling interrupted smoothly. "Alexander is suffering from severe exhaustion and grief-induced hallucinations! I have called an emergency board vote for noon today. Under Section 4 of the corporate charter, we will vote to temporarily strip Alexander of his CEO authority and appoint me as interim Chairman."

Suddenly, the heavy double oak doors of the boardroom were kicked wide open.

Alexander Bennett stepped into the room. He wore a crisp black suit, his posture straight as a steel beam, his brown eyes radiating an terrifying, undeniable aura of power. Beside him walked Marcus Kane, carrying two heavy leather briefcases, flanked by four uniformed officers from the NYPD Financial Crimes Division.

The room plunged into absolute silence.

"Good morning, Richard," Alexander said, his voice calm, measured, and deadly as a loaded pistol. "I see you've started the party without me."

Sterling’s eyes narrowed, but he quickly assumed a patronizing smile. "Alexander. You shouldn't be here. You need rest. We were just discussing a temporary leave of absence so you can handle your... domestic situation."

"My domestic situation is fully under control," Alexander said, stepping up to the head of the table. He motioned to Marcus, who opened the briefcases and laid thick stacks of bound legal documents before every single board member. "What is not under control is the thirty million dollars you embezzled from the corporate research wing over the last seven years."

Sterling’s smile vanished, replaced by a twitch along his cheek. "That is a slanderous lie! Those funds were allocated to offshore medical research—"

"—To a private, unregistered psychiatric facility named Villa Rose outside Zurich, Switzerland," Alexander cut him off, his voice ringing through the room like thunder. "A facility where you and my late father paid three hundred thousand dollars a month to keep my wife, Catherine Bennett, in an medically induced state of amnesia!"

Gasps echoed through the boardroom. Mrs. Danforth dropped her pen in horror.

"You're insane!" Sterling shouted, standing up, his face flushing crimson. "Catherine Bennett died seven years ago! There's a death certificate!"

"A forged death certificate signed by Dr. Julian Vance," Detective Miller of the NYPD stepped forward, pulling out a set of steel handcuffs. "Dr. Vance was arrested at JFK airport two hours ago trying to board a flight to Dubai. He gave a full signed confession detailing your wire fraud, conspiracy to kidnap, and treason against the Bennett estate, Mr. Sterling."

Sterling backed away toward the floor-to-ceiling glass window, his eyes darting frantically toward the door. "You can't prove any of this! That money was approved by Arthur!"

"Arthur is dead, Richard," Alexander said, stepping right up to Sterling, looking down at the man who had helped destroy his family. "And you are going to spend the rest of your pathetic life in a federal penitentiary. Board members... I move to immediately strip Richard Sterling of all corporate shares and vote for his permanent removal."

"Seconded!" Mrs. Danforth shouted instantly, followed by every single hand around the table shooting into the air.

As the police officers slammed the handcuffs around Sterling’s wrists and dragged him screaming out of the boardroom, Alexander looked out the high window toward the clouds above New York.

He pulled his phone from his pocket and pressed speed dial.

"Marcus," Alexander said into the phone, his voice trembling with an unstoppable wave of hope. "Fuel the private jet. We are flying to Switzerland."
