Chapter 4 - The Golden Cage

The Bennett Penthouse on Fifth Avenue was a sprawling, three-story mansion in the sky, featuring floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking Central Park, white marble floors, and priceless artwork. But tonight, it was transformed into a high-security medical recovery unit.

Dr. Elizabeth Vance (no relation to Julian Vance), a top pediatric specialist, stepped out of the newly decorated master guest suite, pulling off her stethoscope.

Alexander stood in the hallway, having changed into dry clothes, his eyes fixed on the bedroom door. "How is she, Elizabeth?"

"Severe malnutrition, localized frostbite on her toes, and mild bronchitis," Dr. Elizabeth reported, her voice full of professional empathy. "Physically, with proper care, good nutrition, and rest, she will make a complete recovery within a month. But emotionally... Alex, she’s like a wild bird that has lived in a cage its entire life. Loud noises make her jump, and she refuses to sleep on the bed."

Alexander’s heart broke again. "She won't sleep on the bed?"

"She piled three heavy blankets on the rug near the closet," Elizabeth explained gently. "Children who have suffered severe neglect feel safer in enclosed spaces near the floor. Don't force her, Alex. Give her time to realize she is safe."

Alexander nodded slowly, pushing open the heavy mahogany door.

The room was warm, filled with the gentle, amber glow of a burning fireplace. A large tray of chicken noodle soup, fresh fruit, and warm milk sat on a low table. Maya was sitting on the thick rug, wrapped in a plush cashmere blanket, clutching her small silver pendant. Thomas was sitting two feet away, quietly reading an illustrated fairy tale book out loud to her.

When Alexander walked in, Maya tensed slightly, her fingers tightening around her pendant.

Alexander sat down cross-legged on the floor a few feet away, making sure he was lower than her so he didn't appear intimidating.

"Did you like the soup, Maya?" Alexander asked softly.

Maya looked down at the empty porcelain bowl, then at Alexander. "It was... warm," she whispered, her voice still raspy from bronchitis. "In the group home... if we didn't finish our chores by six, Mrs. Gable didn't give us supper."

Alexander felt an unholy, lethal fury surge through his veins at the mention of Mrs. Gable, but he forced his face to remain serene and gentle. "Mrs. Gable will never hurt another child again, Maya. My lawyers and the police had her arrested two hours ago. The home is closed, and all the other children have been placed in safe, proper medical shelters."

Maya blinked, her brown eyes wide with astonishment. "You... you closed the home?"

"Nobody hurts my children," Alexander said with absolute, unyielding certainty. "Maya... tomorrow, a wonderful lady named Clara is coming to help you pick out any clothes, toys, or books you want. This is your home now. You have your own room, your own family, and a big brother who will never let you out of his sight."

Thomas grinned proudly, turning a page in his book. "And I'm teaching her how to play chess tomorrow!"

Maya looked around the vast, luxurious room, then down at her clean, warm fleece pajamas. "Why didn't my mom come with you?" she asked softly, her innocent question cutting through the room like a razor. "If she loved us... why did she leave me in the dark?"

Alexander took a deep, shuddering breath. He reached out slowly, placing his hand open on the rug between them. Maya hesitated for a second before placing her small, warm hand in his palm.

"Your mother didn't leave you, Maya," Alexander said, his voice choked with emotion. "Bad, powerful people took her from us. But I promise you on my life... I am going to find out what happened to her. And if she is still out there anywhere in this world, I will bring her home to us."

Downstairs in the private study, Marcus Kane was staring at a secured laptop screen. His face was grim.

He picked up his phone and dialed Alexander’s direct line.

"Alex," Marcus said, his voice cold as steel. "We have a massive problem. The encrypted files we seized from Arthur Bennett's estate vault... I just decrypted the final drive. Your father didn't act alone when he stole Catherine seven years ago."

May you like

Alexander stood near the fireplace in the hallway, his jaw clenching. "Who else was involved?"

"The current Vice Chairman of Bennett Enterprises," Marcus revealed. "Richard Sterling. He spent thirty million dollars from the corporate slush fund to pay off the Swiss clinic. And Alex... three hours ago, Richard Sterling’s private jet filed a flight plan for a private medical airstrip outside Zurich."
