Chapter 8 - The Crimson Canvas

Two weeks later, the Cross estate was completely transformed.

The security system had been entirely overhauled, featuring state-of-the-art biometric scanners, thermal perimeter sensors, and an elite detail of guards personally vetted by Damian himself. But despite the high-tech upgrades, the mansion felt warmer, brighter, and more alive than it had in thirty years.

It was a quiet Saturday afternoon. Sunlight poured through the tall leaded windows of the grand study, warming the Persian rugs and glinting off the polished brass of Damian’s desk.

Damian sat in his leather chair, reviewing a portfolio of international shipping acquisitions, when the heavy oak door creaked open.

Ellie marched into the room.

She wore a bright yellow sundress with matching red shoes, her dark hair tied up in two bouncy pigtails that bobbed with every step she took. In her hands, she clutched a fresh sheet of heavy, premium-grade art paper and a thick black Sharpie marker.

Damian immediately put the billion-dollar shipping portfolio aside, breaking into a warm, genuine smile that he never showed to the outside world.

“Well, hello there, Picasso,” Damian greeted her softly, leaning back in his chair and opening his arms. “What masterpiece have you brought me today?”

Ellie scrambled effortlessly up onto his lap, settling comfortably against his chest as she held up the paper for him to see.

It wasn't a crude drawing of a gate or a green snake this time.

It was a magnificent, sprawling portrait of a massive, shining castle surrounded by tall green trees, a bright yellow sun, and three stick-figures standing hand-in-hand in the front yard. One figure was tall and wore a dark suit. Another figure wore a bright dress. And the smallest figure in the middle held a tiny, sparkling star.

Damian stared at the drawing, a sudden, powerful lump forming in his throat. He gently traced the edge of the paper with his thumb.

“Is this us?” he asked, his voice thick with unexpressed emotion.

“Uh-huh!” Ellie nodded enthusiastically, pointing to the tall figure in the suit. “That’s Mr. Damian. That’s Mommy. And that’s me! We live in the castle forever and ever!”

Hannah appeared in the doorway of the study, leaning against the wooden frame with a soft, affectionate smile playing across her lips. She wore a simple blue linen dress, looking radiant and completely at peace.

“I hope she’s not interrupting anything important, Mr. Cross,” Hannah teased softly, using the formal title just for old time's sake.

“She could never interrupt anything important, Hannah,” Damian replied, looking up from the drawing to meet her dark, loving eyes. “Because she is the most important thing in this house.”

Hannah walked over to the desk, resting her hand gently on Damian’s shoulder, leaning down to press a soft, lingering kiss to his cheek.

Damian wrapped one arm around Ellie, holding her close against his heart, while his other hand reached out to entwine his fingers securely with Hannah’s.

The Chicago underworld still whispered fearfully about Damian Cross—the untouchable crime boss who ruled the city with an iron fist. But inside the walls of his estate, the fearsome syndicate leader was gone. In his place was simply a man who had found his redemption in the midnight scrubbing of a ruined shoe, and a family that no empire in the world could ever buy or break.
