Chapter 3 - Shadows Over the Estate

Night fell over Chicago like a heavy, velvet shroud, bringing with it a biting wind that rattled the frozen windowpanes of the Cross estate.

Inside the mansion’s sprawling, fire-lit kitchen, the atmosphere was warm and smelled of cinnamon and vanilla. Hannah Reed stood by the marble island, carefully mixing a batch of honey-lemon tea while humming a soft, wordless lullaby. Upstairs in the guest wing, Ellie was finally fast asleep, tucked beneath a mountain of heavy goose-down blankets, clutching a brand-new box of sixty-four Crayola crayons that Damian had personally ordered delivered via express courier from New York.

The heavy oak kitchen door swung open, and Damian walked in. He had discarded his suit jacket, rolling up the sleeves of his crisp white dress shirt to reveal the corded muscle and faint scars of a man who had fought his way to the top of the underworld.

Hannah turned around, wiping her hands on her apron. One look at his face told her everything she needed to know.

“It’s done?” she asked softly, her voice barely audible over the crackle of the wood-burning stove.

“It’s done,” Damian said, walking over to the island and leaning against the marble. He rubbed the back of his neck, a rare look of exhaustion crossing his sharp features. “Marcus is gone. The security codes have been completely rewritten, and the perimeter is locked down tighter than a federal penitentiary. No one else is getting in.”

Hannah exhaled a long, shaky breath, her shoulders dropping visibly. “I was so scared, Mr. Cross. When you showed me that drawing… I realized how close we were to the edge. If Marcus had been working with the Morettis, they could have… they could have hurt Ellie.”

Damian’s eyes darkened at the thought. The mere concept of anyone laying a finger on the little girl who had polished his shoes sent a murderous, primal rage surging through his veins.

“They won't,” Damian said, his voice absolute. “I’m doubling the personal detail around this wing. No one enters or leaves without my direct authorization. You and Ellie are safe here, Hannah. I give you my word.”

Hannah looked up at him, her dark eyes shining with a mixture of profound gratitude and deep, complex emotion. In the months since she had arrived at the estate—transitioning from an exhausted, overworked housekeeper to a respected resident of the manor—her relationship with the feared crime boss had evolved in ways she never could have anticipated. He wasn't just her employer anymore. He was her protector, her confidant, and, in the quietest moments of the night, a man whose wounded soul she found herself wanting to heal.

“You carry a lot of weight, Damian,” she said quietly, using his first name—a liberty she only took when the doors were locked and the world was shut out. She stepped closer, sliding a steaming mug of honey-lemon tea across the marble toward him. “You spend your whole life fighting wars, looking over your shoulder, waiting for the next knife in the back. Doesn't it ever get exhausting?”

Damian looked down at the mug, then up into Hannah’s eyes. For a man who had built an empire on emotional detachment, her words hit dangerously close to home.

“It used to be all I knew,” Damian admitted, wrapping his hands around the warm ceramic. “Before… before Ellie dragged that heavy polish box into the shoe room, I didn't care about tomorrow. I had wealth, power, and an empire of ash. I was just waiting for someone to finally put a bullet through my heart and end the routine.”

Hannah reached across the island, her fingertips gently brushing against the back of his hand. Her skin was warm, soft, and steady.

“Don’t talk like that,” she whispered, her voice fierce. “You have a family here now, Damian. Whether you realize it or not.”

May you like

Before Damian could answer—before he could lean into the touch that felt more intoxicating than any scotch in his private bar—a sharp, high-pitched alarm shrieked through the estate's internal communication system.

It wasn't the perimeter alarm. It was the internal panic code for the west wing guest quarters.
