Chapter 8 - Rebuilding the Foundation

The revelation of the medical fraud sent shockwaves through the healthcare sector. Dr. Hasting was arrested within twenty-four hours, his medical license permanently revoked alongside his freedom. For our family, the victory was twofold: the monsters had been exposed, and my wife had her future back.
With her true diagnosis confirmed, Evelyn’s medical team immediately adjusted her treatment plan. The heavy, debilitating doses of experimental drugs were replaced by standard, localized therapies that were far more gentle on her body. Within a month, the color began to return to her cheeks, and the pale, angry treatment marks along her neck began to fade into soft, silver lines of survival.
Caleb, meanwhile, threw himself into correcting the damage done to the company. He took over the administrative restructuring of Sterling Medical, working twelve-hour days to ensure that our supply lines were secure and that every employee felt protected after the breach.
One evening, as the autumn wind began to rattle the windowpanes of our suburban home, Caleb came over for dinner. He looked tired, but the hollow, broken look in his eyes had been replaced by a quiet maturity.
“I talked to the lawyers today, Dad,” he said, helping me set the table while Evelyn was in the kitchen, her laughter drifting out along with the scent of roasted garlic. “The divorce was finalized this morning. Annulment, actually. Fraudulent intent under civil code. The marriage never legally existed.”
“How are you holding up, son?” I asked, setting down the glasses.
“I’m okay,” he said, looking out the window at the falling leaves. “The hardest part isn't the money or the public embarrassment. It’s knowing that I let someone like that look at Mom and see an opportunity instead of a human being. I’ll never forgive myself for not seeing through her.”

“Caleb,” Evelyn said, stepping out of the kitchen with a large ceramic bowl of salad. She walked over and cupped his face with her warm hands. “You were a target because you have a good heart. They looked at your capacity to love and tried to use it as a weapon. That is their failure, not yours. Don't you ever let them turn you cold.”
Caleb closed his eyes, leaning into her touch, the last remnants of guilt finally beginning to wash away.
