Chapter 4 - The Discovery

By Tuesday morning, the corporate headquarters of Sterling Medical Solutions was under a state of lockdown. Forensic IT experts had spent forty-eight hours examining every terminal that Vanessa had been near during her visits over the past year.
I sat in my office, rubbing my eyes as the blue light from the computer screen blurred my vision. Evelyn sat across from me, reviewing a stack of medical billing charts. Despite the chaos, she insisted on being present. She claimed the work kept her mind off the upcoming clinical trial adjustments.
The door opened, and Sarah, our lead security analyst, stepped in holding a encrypted flash drive.
“Martin, Evelyn, you need to see this,” Sarah said, her expression grim. “We found a secondary keylogger installed on the main server through a remote access point. It wasn't just Vanessa downloading the filtration patents. She was looking for something else.”
I frowned, leaning forward. “What else could she want? The patents are the crown jewels of this firm.”
“She was looking for the clinical trial data for Project Resolute,” Sarah explained, plugging the drive into my secure terminal. “Specifically, the patient lists, the supplier pricing, and the proprietary chemical formulations for the new chemotherapy delivery system.”
Evelyn gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. “Project Resolute is the only reason I’m still standing, Sarah. If that data is corrupted or leaked before the FDA approval goes through, the entire trial could be halted.”
“It’s worse than a leak,” Sarah said, pulling up a series of encrypted emails. “Vanessa wasn't just selling this to a competitor. She was working with a corporate liquidation firm called Aethelgard. Their entire business model is to find mid-sized medical companies with high-value patents, steal the data, create a artificial regulatory crisis to drive the stock value down, and then buy the company for pennies on the dollar during a forced bankruptcy.”
I felt a cold sweat break out across my neck. “Aethelgard… that’s the firm run by Marcus Vance. He’s been trying to buy out Sterling Medical for three years.”
“And Vanessa was his insider,” Sarah confirmed. “According to these logs, her entire relationship with Caleb was orchestrated. She didn't meet him by accident at that charity gala last spring. She was hired to get close to the family, integrate herself into our trust structure, and provide Vance with the leverage he needed to break us.”
The phone on my desk rang, its sharp chime breaking the silence. I picked it up, my jaw tight.
“Martin Sterling,” I said.
“Martin, it’s Caleb,” his voice was shaking, background noise suggesting he was standing on a busy street corner downtown. “I’m at Vanessa’s apartment. I came to get my things, but the place is completely empty. All her clothes, her electronics, everything is gone. But Dad… she left a note on the counter. It’s addressed to you.”

“What does it say, Caleb?”
There was a long pause on the line, the sound of his ragged breathing filling the speaker. “It says, 'The patents were just the first step, Martin. If you don't drop the lawsuit by Friday, I’ll release the unverified trial data to the medical boards. Let’s see how long Evelyn survives without her drugs.'”
