Chapter 5 - The Collapse of the Dynasty

Don Roberto turned to his son, Mateo. "Take your ring off. We are leaving."

"Dad... please..." Fernanda sobbed, dropping to her knees on her expensive bridal gown, grabbing Mateo’s arm. "It wasn't me! It was my mother! I didn't want to do this!"

Mateo looked down at her with a mixture of pity and heartbreak. He gently unclasped her fingers from his coat, slid his wedding band off his finger, and handed it back to her. "You knew about the money, Fernanda. You were bragging about the Paris honeymoon yesterday. You knew where it came from."

Mateo turned around and walked down the stage stairs behind his father. Don Roberto paused at the bottom of the steps, turning to face the 320 stunned guests who were capturing every single second on their smartphones.

"I apologize to everyone who traveled to Querétaro tonight," Don Roberto announced calmly into the house microphone he had retrieved from the podium. "The Arrellano family will not be associated with fraud, theft, or the abuse of a child. The catering and venue services for the remainder of the evening are canceled. Good night."

With those words, the Arrellano family and their dozens of high-profile business associates stood up in unison and walked out of the grand ballroom.

The room erupted into total chaos. Guests began whispering, filming, and rushing toward the exits. The venue manager, seeing the Arrellano family depart, immediately signaled the technicians to turn off the decorative lighting and cut the main sound system.

Veronica stood frozen in the center of the stage, her dream of rising into San Luis Potosí’s elite society crumbling into dust right before her eyes. Her daughter was sobbing uncontrollably on the floor, her expensive gown ruined by spilled champagne and crushed flowers.

Veronica turned her gaze toward me, her eyes burning with pure, unadulterated hatred.

"You destroyed my family," she whispered, her voice trembling with venom as she took a slow step toward me. "You little parasite. You brought down everything I built."

"You destroyed yourself, Veronica," I said, holding Leo firmly against my side. "You traded your family's integrity for cheap prestige, and you used my son as a footstool to get it."

"Diego!" Veronica screamed at her son. "Look at what your wife did to your sister! Look at what she did to our name! Order her to give those papers back! Order her to apologize to the guests right now!"

Diego stood between us, looking at his mother’s frantic, ugly face, and then at me. For five years, he had deferred to her every command, sacrificing our independence, our dignity, and our peace to satisfy her endless demands.

"Diego," I said softly, my voice devoid of anger, left only with a profound, final clarity. "I am leaving tonight. With or without you. But if you walk out that door with her, you will never see me or Leo again."
