Chapter 3 - The Broken Veil

The silence in the ballroom was total. The mariachi players in the back lowered their instruments. The caterers stopped pouring wine. Every pair of eyes in the venue shifted from me to Fernanda.
Fernanda clutched her bouquet so tightly that a few white orchid petals snapped and fell to the polished floor. "Laura... please..." she stuttered, her voice shaking uncontrollably. "You're making a huge scene..."
"Where is the yellow envelope, Fernanda?" I asked softly over the microphone. "The one holding the cash kickback from the venue manager for overpayment? The one you and your mother were discussing while my hungry son was sitting alone in the hallway?"
Don Roberto Arrellano stepped forward, his expression cold and stern. He was a man accustomed to managing vast business empires, and he possessed zero tolerance for deceit. He looked down at Veronica, then at his son's bride.
"What envelope is she talking about, Veronica?" Don Roberto asked, his low, powerful voice carrying across the quiet stage even without a microphone.
"It's nothing, Roberto!" Veronica stammered, her regal composure completely collapsing. Her pearls shook against her throat. "Laura is an ungrateful, low-class girl we took into our home! She’s trying to extort us because she’s envious of Fernanda's success! Diego, tell him! Tell Don Roberto your wife is lying!"
All eyes turned to Diego. He stood frozen under the glaring spotlight, caught between the mother who had controlled his entire life and the wife whose trust he had allowed to be broken.
"Diego," I said, turning my gaze to my husband. "Tell the truth. Did you or did you not promise me, on your honor as my husband, that the 560,000 pesos I transferred would be repaid to our home fund?"
Diego swallowed hard, sweating through his collar. He looked at his mother’s furious glare, then at Don Roberto’s unyielding gaze, and finally at our small son, who was holding his bandaged knees and trembling behind my skirt.
"Laura..." Diego stammered weakly, his voice cracking through the silence. "We... we were going to pay you back... eventually... My mom just needed to balance the books for the estate..."
A collective gasp echoed through the ballroom.
Don Roberto raised a hand, cutting Diego off entirely. He turned to his son, Mateo. "Mateo. Go to the bride's dressing room. Fetch the bag."
"Roberto, no! You cannot search my daughter's personal belongings!" Veronica shrieked, stepping in front of Mateo. "This is an outrage! This is our family's private business!"
"It ceased to be private the moment your family used fraudulently acquired funds to host an event under my family's name," Don Roberto declared coldly. "Mateo, go."
Mateo, looking conflicted and deeply embarrassed, walked swiftly off the stage toward the private bridal suites. Fernanda broke down into heavy, silent tears, ruining her carefully applied wedding makeup.
Veronica turned her fury back toward me, her eyes wild with rage. "You ruined everything, you miserable little clerk!" she hissed, stepping toward me with her hand raised. "You ugly, petty little—"

"Touch my mother again, and I'll tell them about the papers in the car too," Leo suddenly shouted from behind me, his small voice echoing surprisingly loud through the silent ballroom.
Veronica stopped dead in her tracks.
